What power can the GT2871R Turbocharger make?

Garrett rates the GT2871R Turbocharger at 280 to 475 horsepower on 1.8L to 3.0L engines. The figure is calculated from the choke flow of the compressor map and represents potential flywheel horsepower, so fuel, boost and the calibration determine what a given engine makes.

Which actuator comes on this GT2871R?

Turn 14 lists this part number with the 480009-6 high boost actuator. Garrett lists 480009-0006 in its catalogue as a 1.0 bar actuator, against 0.5 bar for the 480009-0009 low boost unit. A stiffer spring helps the internal wastegate hold higher boost targets.

How does the GT2871R compare with the GT2860RS?

Both share the 54mm by 47mm GT28 turbine wheel. The GT2871R has a 53mm compressor inducer against 47mm on the GT2860RS, raising the Garrett rating to 280 to 475 horsepower from 250 to 360. The GT2860RS spools sooner on smaller engines.

Is 0.86 A/R the right housing?

It suits engines at the larger end of the range or builds aiming at the top of the rating, since the bigger housing flows more exhaust at high rpm. Garrett also lists a 0.64 A/R GT2871R, which builds boost earlier on smaller or street-driven engines.

Is the GT2871R oil and water cooled?

Yes. Garrett lists the GT2871R with a dual ceramic ball bearing cartridge in an oil and water cooled center housing. The installation needs an oil feed and drain plus a coolant feed and return, along with gaskets and flanges that suit the engine.

Description

Garrett GT2871R Turbocharger, 0.86 A/R Internal Wastegate

Garrett’s GT2871R Turbocharger in 0.86 A/R form is the larger-compressor GT28 turbo, a 53mm by 71mm wheel on the 54mm GT28 turbine, supplied complete with a 0.86 A/R internally wastegated housing and actuator. Turn 14 lists it with actuator 480009-6, which Garrett identifies in its catalogue as a 1.0 bar unit. Garrett rates the GT2871R at 280 to 475 horsepower on 1.8L to 3.0L engines. It suits a 2.0L to 2.5L build aiming at 400 horsepower or more; a mild engine will spool a GT2860RS sooner.

Construction

Garrett lists the GT2871R with original GT Series aerodynamics, a cast compressor wheel and a dual ceramic ball bearing cartridge in an oil and water cooled center housing. Garrett also offers non-wastegated turbine housing options for the GT2871R.

Features

53mm compressor inducer, larger than the 47mm wheel in the GT2860R and GT2860RS
0.86 A/R internally wastegated turbine housing with actuator
Higher spring actuator, 480009-6 per Turn 14, for holding more boost

Specifications

Compressor inducer and exducer: 53mm and 71mm
Compressor trim and A/R: 56 and 0.60
Turbine inducer and exducer: 54mm and 47mm
Turbine trim and A/R: 76 and 0.86
Wastegate: Internal
Actuator: 480009-6, 1.0 bar (Turn 14 and Garrett catalogue)
Bearing system: Dual ceramic ball bearing

Applications

The GT2871R Turbocharger is not vehicle specific. Garrett sizes it by engine and output:

Engine displacement: 1.8L to 3.0L
Power range: 280 to 475 horsepower (Garrett rating)

Notes

Garrett’s GT28 turbine kit table lists its 0.86 A/R wastegated housing with a T25 inlet and 5-bolt outlet
Other GT2871R configurations are available
Garrett publishes speed sensor installation instructions for this turbo; the Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately
Garrett does not publish a maximum turbocharger speed for the GT2871R

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
