Who should choose the 0.86 A/R GT2860RS Turbocharger?

Owners of 2.5L to 3.0L engines, or smaller engines that rev high, who want the GT2860RS Turbocharger to reach the top of its rating. The 0.86 A/R housing lowers exhaust back pressure at high rpm. A small street engine that needs early boost suits the 0.64 A/R better.

How much horsepower is the GT2860RS good for?

Garrett lists 250 to 360 horsepower for 1.8L to 3.0L engines, calculated from compressor choke flow and expressed as potential flywheel horsepower. The 0.86 A/R housing gives the engine the exhaust flow to approach 360 horsepower if fuel, boost and calibration are built to match.

Is this the same turbo as the 0.64 A/R GT2860RS?

The center section and wheels are the same in Garrett data: a 47mm by 60mm compressor wheel and a 54mm by 47mm turbine wheel. Only the turbine housing differs. The 0.86 A/R housing trades some low-speed response for better flow at the top of the rev range.

Will I need an external wastegate?

No. Garrett lists this part number with an internal wastegate and an included actuator, so boost is controlled at the turbocharger. Garrett also makes free-float GT28 housings in 0.57 and 0.72 A/R with V-band ends for external wastegate builds, sold separately.

What maintenance does a ball bearing GT2860RS need?

Clean oil at the right pressure and a working coolant circuit. Garrett lists the center housing as oil and water cooled with a dual ceramic ball bearing cartridge, so the oil feed, drain and coolant lines should be routed and sized correctly from the first start.

Description

Garrett GT2860RS Turbocharger, 0.86 A/R Internal Wastegate

Garrett’s GT2860RS Turbocharger with the 0.86 A/R turbine housing is the higher-flow GT2860RS part number, using the same 47mm compressor wheel and dual ceramic ball bearing CHRA as the 0.64 A/R unit with a larger internally wastegated housing and actuator. Garrett’s rating for the GT2860RS is 250 to 360 horsepower across 1.8L to 3.0L engines. The 0.86 A/R makes more sense on a 2.5L to 3.0L engine, or a smaller one that revs high and wants to reach the upper part of that rating. A 1.8L street engine will feel the later boost and is better on the 0.64 A/R.

Features

0.86 A/R internally wastegated turbine housing for more exhaust flow at high rpm
Dual ceramic ball bearing cartridge in an oil and water cooled center housing
Cast compressor wheel with original GT Series aerodynamics
Complete turbo, supplied with the turbine kit and actuator

Specifications

Compressor inducer and exducer: 47mm and 60mm
Compressor trim and A/R: 62 and 0.60
Turbine inducer and exducer: 54mm and 47mm
Turbine trim and A/R: 76 and 0.86
Wastegate: Internal, actuator included
Bearing system: Dual ceramic ball bearing

Applications

The GT2860RS Turbocharger is not vehicle specific. Garrett sizes it by engine and output:

Engine displacement: 1.8L to 3.0L
Power range: 250 to 360 horsepower (Garrett rating)

Notes

A 0.64 A/R GT2860RS is also available for quicker spool
Garrett’s GT28 turbine kit table lists its 0.86 A/R wastegated housing with a T25 inlet and 5-bolt outlet
Garrett publishes speed sensor installation instructions for this turbo; the Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately
Expect boost to build later than with the 0.64 A/R housing

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
