How much horsepower is the G42-1585 G-Series II Super Core rated for?

Garrett rates the G42-1585 G-Series II Super Core at 475 to 1585 horsepower on 2.0L to 7.0L engines. The figure is based on the choke flow of the compressor map and describes potential flywheel horsepower, so reaching the top of the range depends on fuel, boost, the turbine housing and the calibration.

Can I fit it in place of a G42-1450?

Yes. Garrett describes G-Series II as a direct upgrade for Gen I owners, using the existing compressor and turbine housings. A G42-1450 owner can keep the G42 turbine kit, swap the core and then recalibrate, since Garrett states the added flow needs a calibration before it turns into power.

Which G42 turbine housing A/R should I run?

Garrett offers 1.01, 1.15 and 1.28 A/R. The 1.01 favors earlier boost on smaller displacement, the 1.28 favors flow at high rpm on large engines, and the 1.15 sits between them. Each comes with a V-band or T4 divided inlet, and every one of them needs an external wastegate.

Is this core overkill for my build?

It can be. This is the largest compressor Garrett offers on the G42 frame, so on an engine targeting well under 1000 horsepower the 73mm G42-1325 will likely be easier to spool. It makes the most sense where the power goal sits in the upper half of its rated range.

What is the speed limit of the G42-1585?

Garrett lists a maximum allowable turbocharger speed of 120,000 rpm. Operation above that is at the risk of the owner and may cause damage or premature failure. A speed sensor fitted to the compressor housing reports shaft speed in real time, and Garrett sells the sensor kit separately.

Description

Garrett G42-1585 G-Series II Super Core, 79mm Compressor

Garrett’s G42-1585 G-Series II Super Core is the top of the G42 range, a 79mm by 98mm compressor wheel with second-generation aerodynamics on an Inconel G-Series turbine, rated by Garrett at up to 1585 horsepower on 2.0L to 7.0L engines. Against the first-generation G42-1450 with the same wheel dimensions, Garrett quotes up to 10 percent more compressor flow at peak pressure ratio and peak speed. It belongs on an engine built to use that capacity; a build stopping near 1000 horsepower is better matched to a 73mm G42.

Construction

The center housing and backplate are one piece, which Garrett says improves durability by reducing failure points. A shorter bearing cartridge makes room for twin piston rings on each side of the shaft wheel assembly, and Garrett quotes the Inconel turbine wheel at 15 to 20 percent more flow than GTX with peak efficiency of up to 74 percent.

Features

Second-generation compressor aerodynamics with increased efficiency at high flow rates
Takes G42 Gen I compressor and turbine housings, so a G42-1450 owner can upgrade with a CHRA swap
Water fittings included

Specifications

Compressor inducer and exducer: 79mm and 98mm
Compressor trim: 65
Compressor housing A/R: 0.85
Turbine inducer and exducer: 82mm and 75mm
Turbine trim: 84
Maximum turbocharger speed: 120,000 rpm

What’s Included

G42-1585 G-Series II super core with compressor housing fitted
Water fittings

Applications

The G42-1585 G-Series II Super Core is not vehicle specific. Garrett sizes it by engine and output:

Engine displacement: 2.0L to 7.0L
Power range: 475 to 1585 horsepower (Garrett rating)
Garrett turbine kits: G42 1.01, 1.15 and 1.28 A/R free float, each with a V-band inlet or a T4 divided inlet and a V-band outlet

Notes

The turbine housing is not included; Garrett sells the G42 turbine housing kits separately
All six G42 turbine kits are free float, so an external wastegate is required
The Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately
Garrett states that running above 120,000 rpm is at the owner’s risk and can result in damage and premature failure
Garrett states a calibration is needed to use the increased compressor flow
Also sold as the G42-1585 CHRA for owners keeping a Gen I compressor housing

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
