What power range does Garrett give the GXR42-72 Super Core?

Garrett rates the GXR42-72 Super Core at 700 to 1450 horsepower on 2.0L to 7.0L engines. The figures are calculated from compressor choke flow and represent potential flywheel horsepower. Fuel system capacity, intercooling, boost and the calibration decide where a given engine actually lands.

Can I reuse my G42 turbine housing?

Yes. Garrett states that G-XRace uses the same twin-scroll T4 and V-band turbine housings as the G-Series, and it lists the G42 1.01, 1.15 and 1.28 A/R kits for this core. An owner upgrading from a G42 can keep the housing and change only the core.

How is the GXR42-72 different from the GXR42-68?

The compressor inducer. The GXR42-72 measures 72.9mm against 68.9mm, which raises the rating from 1400 to 1450 horsepower at the top and from 650 to 700 at the bottom. Both share the turbine wheel, the 0.85 A/R compressor housing and the turbine housing options.

Does this core need an external wastegate?

Yes. Each G42 housing Garrett lists for it is free float, which means there is no internal wastegate. The exhaust manifold needs a flange for an external wastegate, and the gate should be sized for the boost target and exhaust flow of the engine.

What is the speed limit for the GXR42-72?

Garrett sets the maximum allowable shaft speed at 109,000 rpm. Running above it is at the risk of the owner and can cause damage and premature failure, so Garrett recommends a speed sensor in the compressor housing. The Garrett sensor kit is a separate purchase.

Description

Garrett G-XRace GXR42-72 Super Core, 72.9mm Inducer, 75mm Turbine

Garrett’s GXR42-72 Super Core is the largest-inducer core on the GXR42 frame, a 72.9mm by 102mm XBoost compressor wheel over the same 82mm by 75mm turbine the GXR42-68 uses. That extra inducer lifts Garrett’s rating to 700 to 1450 horsepower for engines from 2.0L to 7.0L. It fits drag racing classes with a 72.9mm inducer limit and also suits an unrestricted build that wants the most flow a GXR42 can give before stepping up to the heavier GXR45. Below about 700 horsepower it is a poor fit; Garrett’s own range starts there.

Features

72.9mm compressor inducer with a 102mm exducer
XBoost aerodynamics for higher boost pressure and a lower intake temperature
Lightweight aluminum backplate
Uses the same twin-scroll T4 and V-band turbine housings as the G42

Specifications

Compressor inducer and exducer: 72.9mm and 102mm
Compressor trim and housing A/R: 51 and 0.85
Turbine inducer and exducer: 82mm and 75mm
Turbine trim: 84
Maximum turbocharger speed: 109,000 rpm
Rotation: Standard

Applications

The GXR42-72 Super Core is not vehicle specific. Garrett sizes it by engine and output:

Engine displacement: 2.0L to 7.0L
Power range: 700 to 1450 horsepower (Garrett rating)
Garrett turbine kits: G42 1.01, 1.15 and 1.28 A/R, V-band or divided T4 inlet, V-band outlet, free float

Notes

The turbine housing is not included; Garrett’s matching G42 turbine housing kits are sold separately
An external wastegate is required, because every turbine housing Garrett lists for this core is free float
The Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately
Garrett states that running above 109,000 rpm is at the owner’s risk and can result in damage and premature failure
Garrett asks buyers to verify class rules before purchasing a core for an inducer-limited class

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
