Eventuri Gloss Carbon Intake System for E9X BMW M3

The BMW E9X M3 Eventuri intake system is the product of extensive research and optimization, enhancing what is already one of the best stock intake designs Eventuri has encountered. While the E9X stock airbox features an excellent flow path and ambient air feed system, closer analysis revealed restrictions in the inlet tube connecting the airbox to the intake manifold. Eventuri redesigned this tube while retaining the original airbox, allowing the V8 engine to breathe more efficiently and increase power output. Additionally, they identified a restriction in the air feed system and addressed this by designing a scoop to improve airflow through the airbox, further reducing inlet temperatures and enhancing the overall performance of the system.

Carbon Intake Tube

  • The intake tube was designed to improve the airflow path compared to the stock tube – from the filter to the manifold. It is a 1-piece design which has no internal interfaces and therefore provides a much smoother path for the airflow to negotiate. Furthermore the geometrical transition is from a circular opening for the filter to the oval exit for the manifold. This is a much more efficient change in shape when compared with the stock tube which has to transition from a rectangular opening for the filter to the oval exit for the manifold.

In Order To Appreciate The Improvement In The Design We Must Take a Closer Look At The Stock System

  • The stock intake tube features two concertina sections, providing flexibility for engine movement. However, these sections create multiple internal interfaces that disrupt airflow, causing turbulence and reducing performance efficiency. In contrast, the Eventuri tube has no internal interfaces, allowing for laminar airflow and improved engine breathing.
  • Another issue with the stock tube is the large internal face at the filter connection, which causes airflow circulation due to the abrupt shift in geometry from the rectangular filter opening to the oval tube shape.
  • Eventuri’s tube design, by comparison, offers a smoother transition from a circular opening at the filter end to the oval opening at the inlet manifold, enhancing airflow efficiency.

Flexibility and Movement

  • An important challenge Eventuri addressed was the need for flexibility with engine movement. Instead of using silicone couplers with flexible sections, which would introduce similar airflow disruptions as the stock tube, Eventuri designed the intake tube itself to accommodate engine movement. A compressible neoprene band is positioned around the section where the tube interfaces with the stock airbox. This band seals the connection while allowing the tube to move in and out of the airbox as the engine shifts. By enabling the tube itself to move, Eventuri was able to maintain a smooth and efficient airflow path.

Carbon Air Scoop

  • The E9X M3 airbox system is saturated with cold air from 2 feeds : a lower feed from underneath the headlamp and an upper feed from behind the kidney grills. The primary feed is the lower one from underneath the headlamp as it connects directly to the airbox with minimal change of direction and a large opening to the airbox. This is also a high pressure area of the car and airflow moves through the airbox from underneath to the exit at the top connecting to the exit vent in the bonnet. The other feed from behind the kidney grills which, although is a welcome addition, provides a much lower volume of air to the airbox than the lower feed. This is because airflow has to change direction through 90 degrees twice and also because the duct narrows down significantly before the entry to the airbox.
  • Upon closer inspection of the lower duct, it is evident that a large ridge curves back on itself just before the opening to the airbox. This ridge acts as a barrier, hindering the direct flow of air into the airbox and reducing the entry speed of the airflow.
  • By designing a scoop that sits on top of the stock duct and curves upward earlier, Eventuri eliminates the ridge, allowing the airflow to transition smoothly from the duct to the airbox without restriction.
  • The airflow path is significantly smoother, resulting in a noticeable increase in the velocity of air entering the airbox. This improved airflow helps reduce intake temperatures compared to operating without the scoop. Eventuri has road-tested and data-logged intake air temperatures (IATs), demonstrating a 2-degree reduction using the scoop. To further illustrate its effectiveness, they conducted an experiment using a leaf blower to generate airflow and an airspeed meter to measure the velocity inside the airbox. With the blower fixed in place to direct air into the lower duct, measurements showed a nearly 50% increase in airspeed when the scoop was used.

Debris Shield

  • The final component is a debris shield attached to the filter, designed to deflect debris and water from directly hitting the filter. Given the increased airflow entering the airbox with the scoop, this addition is crucial. It does not negatively impact performance, as the airflow remains unobstructed through the airbox, and intake temperatures are still lower than the stock system.
