Background

  • With the launch of the 992 generation, Porsche introduced a new intercooler and air filter layout, departing from the design used in previous 996, 997, and 991 models. Each model presents unique challenges and requirements, and while the core principle remains consistent, the 992 features a completely reimagined intercooler system layout that also impacts the air intake setup. Unlike earlier models, the 992 no longer has a shared air filter for both turbochargers; instead, individual air filters and housings are located within each rear fender. The air intake feeds for these filters are positioned in the decklid, alongside the intercooler ambient duct and rear fender scoops. This new configuration is thoughtfully designed but leaves room for enhancement—and the do88 intake kit provides that upgrade.

Development

  • The efficiency of a turbocharged engine is significantly influenced by inlet air temperature (IAT) and system backpressure. An often-overlooked factor is ensuring sufficient airflow before the compressor to prevent surge. Reduced vacuum and cooler air enable the turbo to generate a larger air mass, ultimately delivering more intake air and yielding noticeable power gains. A well-designed induction system offers substantial performance benefits. Years of evaluation and development have revealed the strong connection between IAT, adequate airflow to the compressor, and overall engine output. With this insight, it was clear from the outset that a closed system—less affected by surrounding temperatures than an open air filter—was ideal. Additionally, the potential for improvement beyond what a model-specific panel filter can achieve was evident.

The Final Results

  • The development process began with a complete 3D scan of the designated area on the vehicle, enabling do88 to work effectively within the CAD environment using SolidWorks. The air filter system is meticulously optimized for airflow, with radii and angles refined multiple times to achieve peak performance. The final product undergoes verification through both Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and do88’s Superflow SF1020 flowbench, ensuring reliable, accurate data for customers. Constructed from premium vacuum-infused prepreg carbon fiber, the do88 air intake kit fully utilizes the available space within the vehicle’s structure to maximize airflow. The carbon housings accommodate a large cone filter from renowned BMC, featuring their finest filter media. This kit completely replaces the original air filter box, delivering a true performance upgrade.

Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance.
