Background

• Earlier Porsche 911 models feature intercoolers housed within each rear fender, joined by a Y-pipe that routes charge air to the inlet manifold. The 992 adopts a completely new configuration, combining the intercooler and Y-pipe into a single unit positioned under the rear wing. Ambient air is channeled from the rear window into a scoop on the decklid and through the intercooler core for optimal heat transfer. Viewed from the side, this arrangement is more logical but presents new challenges for performance cooling manufacturers. To accommodate a larger core with increased volume and surface area, do88 developed new carbon ducts to allow for the added thickness. The resulting fit and finish reflect the high standards befitting a 911 icon.

Garret Cores

• The cores are Bar & Plate, crafted by the renowned Garrett Motorsport, featuring thin, stacked cooling fins for a densely constructed, highly efficient heat transfer system. Each core measures 105 mm (4″), maximizing thickness for this application. Airflow is evenly distributed across the entire core through meticulously designed, freeform cast end tanks. This complex design process included extensive 3D scanning, CFD analysis, and multiple iterations of 3D printing to achieve the final prototype. Cast end tanks were chosen over CNC-machined alternatives, as they allow for complex shapes that enhance functionality—prioritizing maximum airflow over aesthetic appeal. The tanks are equipped with machined 70 mm (2.75″) connections for high-output capability, complemented by included silicone hoses. Both cores are linked by a central outlet tank leading to the inlet manifold, featuring machined connections and meth bungs for optimal integration.

Carbon Ambient Air Guides

• The air guides are crafted from vacuum-infused, prepreg carbon and include fastening grooves for the air channels, just like the original OE components. Despite the complexity of the shapes, perfect fitment is guaranteed. Proper rubber seals are included where necessary to prevent cooling air from escaping around the core.

Aluminum Pipes

• The BigPack also includes do88 charge pipes, offering a notable upgrade over the original equipment hoses. Crafted from mandrel-bent 63mm (2.5”) aluminum pipes with a sleek satin black powder-coated finish, these pipes deliver improved airflow and durability. Four silicone hoses are included, with the turbo outlet hoses constructed from high-temperature material rated for continuous temperatures up to 240°C (464°F). The hose clamps in these positions are of the “constant tension” type, designed to adjust for thermal expansions in the material.

Performance

• For performance, the do88 intercoolers deliver a substantial reduction in intake temperature. A comparison graph, available in the product images, shows the temperature difference compared to the OE 992 units. This data was collected using an AIM race logger during four consecutive runs on a closed airstrip, with full-throttle accelerations between 50-250 km/h (30-155 mph) in a Porsche 911 Turbo S (757 hp with upgraded software and exhaust). The tests involved hard braking with no cooldown intervals, maintaining the rear wing in the upper position throughout.

Testing

• Initially, four runs were conducted with the car equipped with the 992 OE intercoolers. Afterward, the parts were quickly swapped for do88 intercoolers, followed by a brief shakedown, then five additional runs were completed in the same manner. The results showed a significant drop in inlet air temperature, with a peak difference of 12°C (21.6°F). Extensive development hours were dedicated to refining the end tanks and selecting a core to meet stringent performance demands, resulting in an intercooler that excels in both heat transfer and airflow efficiency. Verified on the in-house Superflow SF-1020 Probench, these do88 intercoolers demonstrate reliable, high-level performance compared to the OE 992 units—delivering what they promise: true performance.
