Background

• Earlier versions of the Porsche 911 housed intercoolers inside the rear fenders, connected by a Y-pipe that directed charge air to the inlet manifold. The 992 introduces a completely redesigned setup, combining the intercooler and Y-pipe into a single unit beneath the rear wing. Ambient air is channeled from the rear window into a scoop on the decklid and through the intercooler core for optimal heat transfer. The active rear wing plays a critical role in this design, directing additional airflow when in its upright position. While this configuration is more efficient, it also presents new challenges for performance cooling manufacturers. To accommodate a core with greater volume and surface area, do88 developed new carbon ducts to allow increased thickness. These advancements in carbon production ensure a fit and finish that align with the iconic status of the Porsche 911.

Garrett Cores

• The intercooler cores are Bar & Plate, sourced from Garrett Motorsport, a leader in performance cooling. With thin, stacked cooling fins, these cores offer dense construction for highly efficient heat transfer. Measuring 105 mm (4”) thick, they maximize available space for this application. Air is evenly distributed through freeform-designed cast end tanks, a product of extensive 3D scanning, CFD analysis, and iterative 3D prototyping. Cast end tanks allow for intricate shapes that CNC machining cannot achieve, prioritizing function over aesthetics to ensure maximum airflow. Each tank includes machined 70 mm (2.75”) connections to support high outputs, paired with silicone hoses for optimal performance. Both cores connect to a central outlet tank leading to the inlet manifold, complete with machined connections and meth bungs.

Carbon Air Guides

• The air guides are made from vacuum-infused prepreg carbon and feature fastening grooves for air channels, replicating the functionality of OE components. Despite their complex shapes, these guides ensure precise fitment. The upper air guides remain consistent across all models, but the lower pieces come in two versions: Standard or SportDesign. SportDesign ducts, designed for better air evacuation through a central outlet in the bumper, offer superior performance, though do88 provides carbon ducts for both configurations. Proper rubber seals prevent air from bypassing the core, ensuring maximum cooling efficiency.

Aluminum Pipework

• The BigPack includes do88 intercooler pipework, an upgrade over the stock hoses. These pipes are crafted from mandrel-bent 63 mm (2.5”) aluminum and finished with a satin black powder coating for improved airflow and durability. The kit also includes four silicone hoses, with turbo outlet hoses made from high-temperature material rated to 240°C (464°F) continuous heat. “Constant tension” hose clamps are used at these positions to accommodate thermal expansion, ensuring reliability under extreme conditions.

Performance

• The do88 intercoolers provide a significant reduction in intake temperatures compared to the OE 992 units. During testing, conducted on a closed airstrip, five consecutive full-throttle runs from 50-250 km/h (30-155 mph) were performed in a Porsche 911 Carrera S (450hp) with no cooldown between runs. The active rear wing remained in its upright position throughout the test. The do88 intercoolers demonstrated a peak temperature reduction of 9°C (16.2°F), as shown in the data graph. This improvement reflects the product’s superior heat transfer and airflow efficiency.

Testing

• Testing involved five runs with the OE 992 intercoolers, followed by a rapid installation of the do88 intercoolers and another five identical runs. The results showed a significant decrease in inlet air temperature, with a peak difference of 9°C (16.2°F). Verified using the Superflow SF-1020 Probench, the do88 intercoolers demonstrated superior airflow and heat transfer efficiency compared to the OE units, delivering reliable and proven performance.
