Design and Engineering
- The extensive research and development invested in the Super Manifold provided a strong foundation for the creation of the Race X Manifold. Combined with real-world testing feedback from race teams and tuners, CSF gathered all the necessary insights to design this advanced manifold. The primary objectives were to enhance airflow and cooling capacity significantly. Utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, CSF’s engineering team worked diligently to develop a manifold that meets the rigorous demands of competitive motorsport drivers while incorporating an array of advanced features.
Biggest/Best Core in the Industry
- When the B58 engine exceeds 1000hp, most aftermarket manifolds struggle to keep up with airflow and cooling demands. To overcome these limitations, CSF developed the Race X Manifold with a 25% larger core . Featuring 15 cooling rows, the Race X Manifold delivers superior airflow and significantly improved cooling capacity to handle the demands of high-performance applications.
Dual or Single Pass
- CSF designed the front water end plate of the Race X Manifold to support both single-pass and ice box configurations. Featuring a -16 ORB bung, the largest available on any aftermarket B58 manifold (compared to the -12 fitting used by competitors), this innovation maximizes water flow. To further optimize performance, CSF partnered with industry-leading fitting and hose specialists Brown and Miller Racing Solutions (BRMS). CSF recommends using BRMS fittings, with a maximum angle of 120 degrees, as they are engineered to eliminate flow restrictions and are widely recognized as the top choice in the motorsport industry.
Top Feed Port Injection with Included Fuel Rail
- The CSF Manifold is equipped with an integrated extruded fuel rail mounted on the outlet side. This AN-8 fuel rail includes a -8 internal hex plug fitting, offering compatibility with both returnless and full-loop fuel system configurations. Each cylinder’s fuel rail aperture features a 7mm opening, optimized for compatibility with most high-performance injectors. For best performance, CSF recommends Injector Dynamics (ID) injectors, the most commonly used for this engine. The supplied hardware kit includes anodized CNC-machined injector hats (quantity 6) designed to accommodate short-height injectors, commonly referred to as “shorties.”
- Individual Nitrous / Methanol Injector Ports:
- The CSF manifold includes a 1/8″ NPT port on each cylinder runner, enabling the use of nitrous or methanol injection. This design ensures precise spray control and even distribution across the engine for optimal performance.
Expanded Vacuum and Parameter Pad
- The CSF Race X Manifold incorporates a port pad machined into the tank on the inlet side, providing flexibility for measuring additional parameters or serving as an extra vacuum source. It features two additional 1/4″ NPT ports alongside the standard three 1/8″ NPT ports, all of which can be sealed using plugs included in the hardware kit if not utilized. Additionally, CSF designed the manifold with a recessed area at the rear to allow easy access to the spin-off oil filter. This thoughtful feature eliminates the need to remove the manifold for routine oil changes, streamlining maintenance for users.
Air Inlet Divider
- The CSF manifold features a unique air divider welded into the inlet-side tank, an exclusive design element. Recognizing the length of the manifold, engineers at VF Engineering ensured consistent air volume and velocity to all cylinders. The air divider optimizes airflow distribution, delivering equal airflow and cooling performance across all cylinders. This ensures that cylinders four, five, and six at the rear of the manifold receive airflow equal to that of cylinders one, two, and three at the front, maximizing overall performance.
Breather Ports for Inlet / Outlet of Water Tanks
- The CSF Race X Manifold includes two 1/8″ NPT ports on the top of the rear water plate. These ports can be utilized to measure inlet and outlet water temperatures or as breather ports to assist with the bleeding procedure. The supplied hardware kit includes 1/8″ NPT plugs for unused ports. CSF recommends following the OEM BMW or Toyota bleeding procedure, which typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.
Slotted Mounting Tabs
- Positioning the CSF manifold in the engine bay is a straightforward process, though aligning the bolt holes on the intake-side mounting tabs can be challenging. During testing, CSF identified this issue and resolved it by slotting the mounting tabs. This design improvement allows bolts to be loosely installed before making final positioning adjustments, simplifying the installation process.
Thermal Rejection Competition Spacer
- CSF offers the KIYLEX® Intake Manifold Spacer, made from a patented high-performance final-stage polymer with strength comparable to aluminum and the ability to withstand temperatures up to 1100°F. Designed to insulate the intake manifold from conductive heat transfer from the cylinder head, the spacer acts as a thermal barrier, reducing manifold temperatures, lowering intake air temperatures (IATs), enhancing charge air cooler efficiency, and combating heat soak. CSF is the exclusive distributor of the KIYLEX® Intake Manifold Spacer for the B58 engine. The Thermal Rejection Spacer is particularly advantageous for drag and roll-racing events, where vehicles often idle in staging lanes. During this time, insufficient airflow over the front-mounted heat exchanger causes extreme heat soak, leading to elevated starting IATs on subsequent runs. The CSF manifold, constructed from billet aluminum and 100% TIG-welded for superior strength, can handle higher boost pressures than the OEM plastic manifold but has higher thermal conductivity, increasing heat transfer between the cylinder head and manifold. By incorporating the Thermal Rejection Spacer, this heat transfer is significantly reduced. The spacer absorbs and dissipates heat from the cylinder head, preventing it from reaching the manifold. Designed with competitive motorsports in mind, the CSF Thermal Rejection Competition Spacer delivers optimal cooling performance for a competitive edge, while also providing substantial benefits to any vehicle equipped with it.
Hardware Kit, Well Thought-Out Instruction Manual
- The CSF manifold’s supplied hardware kit includes all necessary brackets, bolts, washers, and CNC-machined fittings for installation—an industry-exclusive feature of the CSF x VF Engineering design. This innovative inclusion required significant effort to both engineer and manufacture. The kit components are vacuum-packaged and labeled with corresponding letters, simplifying the installation process using an easy-to-follow Bill of Materials (BOM), exploded diagrams, and a step-by-step order of operation procedure. Designed with mechanics, technicians, racers, and DIY enthusiasts in mind, this product ensures precision and ease of use. However, as a racing-specific component, the manifold is intended for installation by skilled and experienced technicians familiar with the B58 engine platform.
