Given current industry trends, it is unlikely that an engine like the S85 will ever appear in production vehicles again. Renowned for its performance, the S85 V10 is an extraordinary engine, but it is not without challenges—most notably the excessive heat it generates. Managing oil temperatures is a significant concern for the M5 and M6, as oil temperatures can rise to dangerously high levels during spirited driving. Compounding the issue, the factory oil cooler is prone to leaking and cracking. Design and Engineering

CSF VS OEM

• The original OE oil cooler from BMW features an all-metal design, which might suggest durability. However, the factory unit has several weak points that commonly lead to leaks. CSF’s Race-Spec oil cooler addresses these vulnerabilities with significant reinforcements. The design features a solid line connection block, engineered to withstand extreme conditions, and a reinforced, braced return tube for enhanced durability. CSF also upgraded the fragile Tub/Fin core of the OE cooler to a more robust and durable Bar / Plate design. This new core is 40% larger than the factory unit, incorporating two additional rows for oil cooling and a significantly thicker core (63mm compared to the OE’s 45mm). These enhancements provide superior cooling capacity and increased oil volume. Additionally, TIG-welded end tanks replace the factory’s brazed construction, ensuring a much stronger and more reliable connection. Together, these upgrades make the CSF Race-Spec oil cooler a high-performance solution for demanding applications.
