COBB Tuning’s Intake for MK8 Volkswagen GTI trades the plastic factory air box for a hand-laid carbon fiber housing with its own scoop and intake ducting, and it is backed by three CARB Executive Orders, so the car stays legal for road use in every state. The gloss twill shell and black Redline badge are meant to be seen every time the hood goes up. Budget for one more part, since the factory hood prop has to come out and COBB requires its Hood Strut Kit alongside the intake.

Construction

Several layers of 2×2 twill carbon fiber sheet form the main airbox, and a gloss clear coat protects that weave from heat and UV fading. Inside, one of the largest oiled filters COBB offers feeds a velocity stack that steers air toward the turbo. The inlet itself is wire-reinforced black silicone with concealed air-pump and vacuum ports, clamped at each end with black anodized hardware.

Installation and Service

COBB designed the Intake for MK8 Volkswagen GTI to go in as a single assembly: mount the supplied brackets following the detailed instructions, then lower the complete unit into place. A bespoke coolant recirculation hose is included with a custom check valve that blocks backflow from the turbo while routing the line out of view. The enclosed filter housing opens without tools for routine cleaning.

COBB Tuning was founded by Trey Cobb in 1999 in Rockwall, Texas, as a Subaru performance shop in the back of his father’s tire shop, and is now headquartered in Austin, Texas.
