That lip builds a high-pressure zone across the upper surface while the underside keeps air moving cleanly beneath the car, and the pressure difference between the two is what pulls front-end lift out and holds steering weight steady through a long fast corner. Metal skid plates run the underside edge, so the first steep driveway takes a scuff on metal instead of a chip out of the carbon.
