Will the WRX 2.0L Intercooler fit my WRX STI?

No. Garrett lists the WRX 2.0L Intercooler for the 2015 and later Subaru WRX with the 2.0L FA20F engine only. The STI uses a different engine and is not on the Garrett fitment list, so an STI owner should choose a cooler designed for that car instead.

Do I need to modify anything to install it?

One thing. Garrett states that the engine cover must be trimmed for proper fitment. Beyond that the cooler goes in the stock location and reuses the OEM bolts, clamps and hoses, and Garrett puts the installation time at about one hour, which makes it one of the quicker upgrades on the car.

How much cooler will intake temperatures be?

Garrett measured an average 30F reduction in intake temperature in wind tunnel testing, using back-to-back dyno pulls with air speed matched to vehicle speed. Cooler, denser intake air is where the gains of up to 16 horsepower and 15 lb-ft recorded in the same test came from.

Is 530 horsepower the gain I will see?

No. 530 horsepower is the most Garrett says this cooler can support on the FA20F. The measured gain in Garrett testing was up to 16 horsepower. The rating matters for planning, because a WRX that later moves to a larger turbocharger can keep this cooler instead of replacing it again.

Is it worth fitting on a stock WRX?

It helps most once the engine is tuned. A stock engine puts less heat into the charge air, so the larger core spends much of its time underused. Owners who run a tune, drive in hot weather or make repeated hard runs gain the most from the 70 percent larger core and the lower intake temperatures Garrett recorded.

Description

Garrett WRX 2.0L Intercooler for 2015+ Subaru WRX FA20F

Garrett’s WRX 2.0L Intercooler is a direct-fit replacement for the factory cooler on the 2015 and later Subaru WRX with the 2.0L FA20F engine, with all-aluminum, TIG welded construction and a core Garrett states is 70 percent larger than stock. Garrett rates it to support up to 530 horsepower (395 kW) and recorded an average 30F (16.7C) drop in intake temperature. It belongs on a tuned FA20F that loses power to heat on back-to-back pulls or long climbs; on a stock WRX driven gently the bigger core has little extra work to do.

Testing

Garrett tested the cooler with back-to-back dyno pulls in a wind tunnel, matching air velocity to vehicle speed, and recorded up to a 30F reduction in intake manifold temperature with gains of up to 16 horsepower (12 kW) and 15 lb-ft (20 Nm) over the factory part.

Features

Vacuum brazed bar-and-plate core with an advanced offset fin design
Cast aluminum end tanks reshaped from the stock design for better air flow
The WRX 2.0L Intercooler installs in the stock location in about one hour
Reuses the OEM bolts, clamps and hoses

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
