How much power can the 106mm GTX5544R Gen II Super Core support?

Garrett rates the 106mm GTX5544R Gen II Super Core at 1400 to 2850 horsepower on engines from 3.0L to 12.0L, with flow up to 258 lbs/min. Garrett calculates the figure from compressor choke flow, so it is potential flywheel horsepower that only a fully developed race engine will approach.

102mm or 106mm GTX5544R?

Both use the 144mm exducer, the 0.96 A/R housing and the same turbine. The 106mm, 54 trim, flows 258 lbs/min and is rated to 2850 horsepower; the 102mm flows 245 lbs/min and is rated to 2700. The 102mm responds a little sooner, so choose the 106mm only for maximum airflow.

Is there an SFI version of this core?

Garrett lists SFI supercore and turbine options for the 106mm GTX5544R Gen II. This part number, 851285-5022S, is listed by Turn 14 as the standard 106mm core. A racer in a class that requires SFI-certified parts should ask BA for the SFI part before ordering.

Which turbine housing is right for a 106mm build?

Garrett offers the GTX55 kits in V-band inlet 1.24 and 1.40 A/R, standard or long outlet, and T6 inlet 1.12, 1.24 and 1.40 A/R. At this airflow most builds run the 1.40 A/R to limit back pressure, but the engine size, fuel and class rules should drive the final choice.

What is the speed limit and how do I monitor it?

Garrett gives a maximum allowable speed of 74,500 rpm for the GTX5544R Gen II and states that exceeding it is at the risk of the owner. The compressor housing has a machined port, plugged at the factory and opened with a 5mm Allen key, for the Garrett speed sensor sold separately.

Description

Garrett GTX5544R Gen II Super Core, 106mm Compressor Inducer

Garrett’s GTX5544R Gen II Super Core with the 106mm inducer is the largest core in this Garrett GTX Gen II line-up, a 54 trim, 144mm wheel that Garrett rates at 1400 to 2850 horsepower and up to 258 lbs/min on engines from 3.0L to 12.0L. It exists for the top of drag racing and land speed, where a big engine needs more air than any GTX5533R can supply. For nearly every other build the 102mm GTX5544R Gen II Super Core or a GTX5533R is the more useful choice.

Gen II Details

Garrett lists a lightweight billet backplate, a new backplate to compressor housing O-ring and a V-band compressor outlet on the 106mm core, with SFI supercore and turbine options available. The 0.96 A/R compressor housing has an improved ported shroud and a fully machined, factory-plugged speed sensor port. The turbine is the 112mm, 84 trim wheel used across the GTX55 frame.

Features

106mm inducer, 54 trim, the highest-flowing GTX5544R wheel
Up to 258 lbs/min of compressor flow, per Garrett
Billet backplate sealed to the compressor housing with an O-ring

Specifications

Compressor inducer and exducer: 106mm and 144mm
Compressor trim: 54
Compressor housing A/R: 0.96
Turbine inducer and exducer: 112mm and 102mm
Turbine trim: 84
Compressor flow: Up to 258 lbs/min
Maximum turbocharger speed: 74,500 rpm

Applications

The GTX5544R Gen II Super Core is not vehicle specific. Garrett lists this inducer for these engines:

Engine displacement: 3.0L to 12.0L
Power range: 1400 to 2850 horsepower (Garrett rating)
Garrett GTX55 turbine kits: V-band inlet in 1.24 or 1.40 A/R, standard or long outlet with cross bolts; T6 inlet in 1.12, 1.24 or 1.40 A/R; all with a V-band outlet

Notes

The turbine housing is not included; Garrett lists seven GTX55 turbine housings for 5533 and 5544 cores
Every GTX55 housing Garrett lists is free float, so an external wastegate is required
The Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately
Garrett states that running above 74,500 rpm is at the owner’s risk and can cause damage and premature failure
Garrett lists SFI supercore and turbine options for the 106mm GTX5544R; this part number is the standard core

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. Rest assured that any order you place on line will be at zero risk to you in this area. If in the event your order cannot be fulfilled at the original intended website price we will offer you a 100% refund, no questions asked. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
