Will the EcoBoost Mustang Intercooler work with aftermarket charge pipes?

Yes. Garrett gave the EcoBoost Mustang Intercooler slightly elongated inlet and outlet ports, which give hoses a more secure surface on high-power builds while staying compatible with OEM hoses and aftermarket charge pipes. The inlet diameter is 2.75 inches, so check that figure against any charge pipe you plan to use.

How long does it take to install?

Garrett quotes about two and a half hours with basic hand tools. The cooler mounts in the stock location and can reuse the factory hoses, clamps and bolts, so no fabrication is involved on a 2015 or later Mustang with the 2.3L EcoBoost engine.

How much power did Garrett measure?

On the Garrett test car the 2.3L made 216 horsepower at 5000 rpm with the factory intercooler and 237 horsepower at 4891 rpm with the Garrett unit. Results on other cars depend on the tune, boost and conditions, but the larger core mainly helps the engine keep its power over repeated pulls.

Is this the same as the black 857564-6002?

It is the same direct-fit design for the 2.3L Mustang. Garrett shows this part number, 857564-6001, on its product page, and Turn 14 lists the 857564-6002 as the black version. Turn 14 gives the black unit a 5.4 inch core height, which matches the figure in the Garrett tech summary.

Does a stock Mustang need a 600 horsepower intercooler?

Not for power alone. The rating is capacity, and a stock 2.3L sits well below it. Where it helps a stock car is heat soak: in Garrett testing the factory cooler saturated after four pulls while the Garrett unit lasted nine. A tuned car gains more, because it puts more heat into the charge air.

Description

Garrett EcoBoost Mustang Intercooler for 2015+ Ford Mustang 2.3L

Garrett’s EcoBoost Mustang Intercooler, part 857564-6001, is the direct-fit cooler for the 2015 and later Ford Mustang 2.3L EcoBoost, with a vacuum brazed bar-and-plate core Garrett states is 60 percent larger than stock and CFD-optimized cast aluminum end tanks. Garrett rates it to support up to 600 horsepower and quotes up to a 40 degree reduction in charge air temperature with up to 30 percent less pressure drop. A tuned or turbo-upgraded 2.3L that heat soaks on repeated pulls is the target; for an untouched commuter it is more cooling than the engine asks for.

Heat Soak Testing

In Garrett’s dyno testing the factory intercooler reached its peak outlet temperature of 183 degrees on the fourth pull, while the Garrett unit took nine pulls to heat saturate and peaked at 154 degrees. On the same car the 2.3L produced 216 horsepower at 5000 rpm with the factory cooler and 237 horsepower at 4891 rpm with the Garrett intercooler.

Features

Elongated inlet and outlet ports for a secure hose grip, compatible with OEM hoses and aftermarket charge pipes
TIG welded, CFD-optimized cast aluminum end tanks that reduce recirculation
Advanced offset fin design for thermal and fatigue performance
The EcoBoost Mustang Intercooler installs in about 2.5 hours with basic hand tools

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
