Does the G25-550 Super Core come with a turbine housing?

No. Garrett defines a super core as the center housing rotating assembly with the compressor housing attached. The turbine housing is a separate purchase, and on this reverse-rotation core it must be one of the reverse G25 kits: 0.72 or 0.92 A/R with V-band connections, offered with an internal wastegate or as a free-float housing.

Why would I choose reverse rotation?

Reverse rotation suits engines where the turbocharger has to be mirrored, most often the second unit on a twin-turbo layout, so both compressor outlets and turbine inlets line up with symmetrical plumbing. If the engine runs one turbocharger on a conventional manifold, the standard-rotation G25-550 is the correct and more common choice.

How much power is the G25-550 Super Core rated for?

Garrett rates the G25-550 Super Core at 300 to 550 horsepower for engines between 1.4L and 3.0L. That number is calculated from the choke flow of the compressor map and represents potential flywheel horsepower, so the real figure depends on fuel, boost, intercooling and the quality of the calibration.

Can I fit a standard rotation G25 housing to this core?

No. Garrett states that reverse-rotation turbine housings are not interchangeable with standard-rotation ones, because the scroll is cast to feed the turbine wheel in the opposite direction. Buy the matching reverse-rotation G25 kit, and check the part number against the Garrett table before ordering.

Do I need a speed sensor?

Garrett recommends one for any build that runs near the limit. The maximum allowable speed for this core is 185,000 rpm, and the compressor housing has a fully machined port for the sensor. The Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately, and it lets the tuner keep the turbocharger inside its map.

Description

Garrett G25-550 Super Core, 48mm Reverse Rotation

Garrett’s G25-550 Super Core in reverse rotation is the 48mm member of the first-generation G25 family, built to spin the opposite way to a conventional turbocharger, with a Mar-M alloy turbine wheel and the compressor housing already fitted. Garrett rates it at 300 to 550 horsepower on engines from 1.4L to 3.0L. Reverse rotation exists for packaging, typically where a twin-turbo layout mirrors one unit against the other, so this is the part for a builder who already knows the exhaust side must turn backwards. A single-turbo four-cylinder on a conventional manifold should buy the standard-rotation core instead.

Design

Garrett gives the first-generation G25 a one-piece center housing and backplate, which removes a joint and with it a possible failure point. A shorter bearing cartridge leaves room for twin piston rings on each side of the shaft, reducing the chance of oil passing the seals. Garrett quotes 80 percent peak compressor efficiency for this 48mm wheel.

Features

48mm G-Series compressor wheel with a 65 trim, in a 0.70 A/R compressor housing
Mar-M alloy turbine wheel rated to 1050C (1922F)
Fully machined speed sensor and pressure ports
Supplied with the oil restrictor and water fittings Garrett lists for the G25

Specifications

Compressor inducer and exducer: 48mm and 60mm
Compressor trim and A/R: 65 trim, 0.70 A/R
Turbine inducer and exducer: 54mm and 49mm
Turbine trim: 84
Maximum compressor efficiency: 80 percent
Maximum turbocharger speed: 185,000 rpm
Rotation: Reverse

What’s Included

G25-550 reverse rotation super core with compressor housing fitted
Oil restrictor and water fittings

Applications

The G25-550 Super Core is not vehicle specific. Garrett sizes it by engine and output:

Engine displacement: 1.4L to 3.0L
Power range: 300 to 550 horsepower (Garrett rating)
Reverse-rotation turbine kits: 0.72 and 0.92 A/R V-band, each with internal wastegate or free float

Notes

The turbine housing is not included; Garrett lists G25 turbine housing kits in reverse rotation
Garrett states that reverse-rotation turbine housings are not interchangeable with standard-rotation housings
The Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately
Garrett states that running above 185,000 rpm is at the owner’s risk and can cause premature failure

About Garrett

Garrett Motion has turbocharged engines since 1955, when its T15 was matched to the Caterpillar D9 crawler, and in 1962 a Garrett turbocharger went into the Oldsmobile Jetfire Turbo Rocket, the first turbocharged production car. Garrett has supplied turbocharging in Formula 1 with Scuderia Ferrari, the FIA World Rally Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It has operated as a stand-alone company since 2018, and its technology is fitted to around 150 million vehicles worldwide.

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
