What is the SFI GTX5533R Gen II Super Core?

It is the 88mm GTX5533R Gen II Super Core in its SFI form. Garrett lists SFI supercore and turbine options for the GTX5533R, and Turn 14 identifies 851285-5007S as the 88mm SFI core. It is meant for racers in classes that require SFI-certified turbocharger components.

Does the SFI core perform differently from the standard 88mm?

Garrett does not publish separate performance data for it. The published 88mm figures are a 44 trim wheel, flow up to 172 lbs/min and a rating of 1000 to 1900 horsepower on 3.0L to 12.0L, calculated from compressor choke flow as potential flywheel horsepower.

Do I need the SFI version?

Only if the rules of the class require it. Many drag racing sanctioning bodies specify SFI-certified parts for high-power entries, and technical inspection checks them. If no such rule applies, the standard 88mm GTX5533R Gen II, 851285-5002S, is the simpler choice.

Which turbine housing goes with the SFI core?

Garrett lists GTX55 housings in V-band inlet 1.24 and 1.40 A/R, including long-outlet versions with cross bolts, and T6 inlet 1.12, 1.24 and 1.40 A/R. Garrett also mentions SFI turbine options, so a racer needing a fully SFI assembly should confirm the housing with BA.

What is the maximum turbocharger speed?

Garrett gives 84,000 rpm as the maximum allowable speed for the GTX5533R Gen II, with operation above it at the risk of the owner. A Garrett speed sensor in the compressor housing port lets the tuner log shaft speed during a pass; the sensor kit is sold separately.

Description

Garrett GTX5533R Gen II Super Core, 88mm Inducer SFI

Garrett’s GTX5533R Gen II Super Core in the 88mm SFI version is the part for racers whose rules call for an SFI supercore, built around the same 88mm inducer that Garrett rates at 1000 to 1900 horsepower on engines from 3.0L to 12.0L. Garrett’s GTX5533R page notes that SFI supercore and turbine options are available, and Turn 14 lists this part number as the 88mm SFI core. It makes sense for sanctioned drag racing and other classes that inspect turbocharger certification. For an unsanctioned build, the standard 88mm core does the same job.

Published Figures

Garrett publishes no separate data sheet for the SFI core, so the figures here are Garrett’s published numbers for the 88mm GTX5533R Gen II: a 133mm exducer, 44 trim, 0.88 A/R compressor housing and flow up to 172 lbs/min, over a 112mm, 84 trim turbine. Those cores carry an improved ported shroud, a billet backplate and a V-band compressor outlet.

Features

SFI supercore version of the 88mm GTX5533R Gen II, per Turn 14
Pairs with Garrett’s SFI turbine options for the GTX55 frame
Machined speed sensor port in the compressor housing

Specifications

Compressor inducer and exducer: 88mm and 133mm
Compressor trim: 44
Compressor housing A/R: 0.88
Turbine inducer and exducer: 112mm and 102mm
Turbine trim: 84
Compressor flow: Up to 172 lbs/min
Maximum turbocharger speed: 84,000 rpm

Applications

The GTX5533R Gen II Super Core is not vehicle specific. Garrett’s figures for the 88mm size are:

Engine displacement: 3.0L to 12.0L
Power range: 1000 to 1900 horsepower (Garrett rating)
Garrett GTX55 turbine kits: V-band inlet in 1.24 or 1.40 A/R, standard or long outlet with cross bolts; T6 inlet in 1.12, 1.24 or 1.40 A/R; all with a V-band outlet

Notes

The turbine housing is not included; Garrett lists seven GTX55 turbine housings for 5533 and 5544 cores
Every GTX55 housing Garrett lists is free float, so an external wastegate is required
The Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately
Garrett states that running above 84,000 rpm is at the owner’s risk and can cause damage and premature failure
Confirm the SFI specification your sanctioning body requires before ordering; the standard 88mm GTX5533R Gen II is also listed

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
