How much power is the 98mm GTX5533R Gen II Super Core rated for?

Garrett rates the 98mm GTX5533R Gen II Super Core at 1000 to 2500 horsepower on 3.0L to 12.0L engines, with compressor flow up to 223 lbs/min. It is the highest rating in the GTX5533R range, calculated from compressor choke flow as potential flywheel horsepower.

Is the 98mm core too big for a 1500 horsepower build?

Yes, in most cases. A 54 trim wheel this large needs a lot of exhaust energy to spin up, so a 1500 horsepower engine would feel slow and sit low on the compressor map. The 85mm or 88mm GTX5533R, rated to 1760 and 1900 horsepower, are better matches for that target.

GTX5533R 98mm or GTX5544R?

The GTX5544R uses a larger 144mm exducer and Garrett rates it at up to 2700 or 2850 horsepower, against 2500 for this 98mm GTX5533R. Both use the same 112mm turbine and GTX55 housings. Choose the GTX5544R only when the engine needs flow beyond 223 lbs/min.

What turbine housings fit the 98mm core?

Any of the seven GTX55 kits Garrett lists for 5533 and 5544 cores. V-band inlet versions come in 1.24 and 1.40 A/R, with standard or long outlets, and T6 inlet versions come in 1.12, 1.24 and 1.40 A/R. None has an internal wastegate.

Is a speed sensor necessary?

Garrett strongly suggests monitoring shaft speed. The maximum allowable speed is 84,000 rpm, and running above it is at the risk of the owner. The compressor housing has a factory-plugged port that opens with a 5mm Allen key for a Garrett sensor, which is a separate purchase.

Description

Garrett GTX5533R Gen II Super Core, 98mm Compressor Inducer

Garrett’s GTX5533R Gen II Super Core with the 98mm inducer is the biggest GTX5533R, a 54 trim wheel that Garrett rates at 1000 to 2500 horsepower with flow up to 223 lbs/min on engines from 3.0L to 12.0L. It is aimed squarely at all-out race engines where peak airflow is the goal, such as a large V8 in a drag car on alcohol or race fuel. Anything short of that will find it lazy. Builds that need even more compressor than this move to the GTX5544R, which shares the GTX55 turbine housings.

Top of the GTX5533R Range

The 98mm wheel runs in Garrett’s 0.96 A/R compressor housing with a fully machined inlet, outlet and ported shroud, a lightweight billet backplate and a V-band outlet. On the exhaust side it uses the same 112mm, 84 trim turbine as every GTX5533R and GTX5544R core, which keeps the seven GTX55 turbine housings interchangeable across the family.

Features

98mm inducer, 54 trim, flowing up to 223 lbs/min
0.96 A/R compressor housing with a V-band outlet
Machined speed sensor port, plugged from the factory

Specifications

Compressor inducer and exducer: 98mm and 133mm
Compressor trim: 54
Compressor housing A/R: 0.96
Turbine inducer and exducer: 112mm and 102mm
Turbine trim: 84
Compressor flow: Up to 223 lbs/min
Maximum turbocharger speed: 84,000 rpm

Applications

The GTX5533R Gen II Super Core is not vehicle specific. Garrett sizes the 98mm version by engine and output:

Engine displacement: 3.0L to 12.0L
Power range: 1000 to 2500 horsepower (Garrett rating)
Garrett GTX55 turbine kits: V-band inlet in 1.24 or 1.40 A/R, standard or long outlet with cross bolts; T6 inlet in 1.12, 1.24 or 1.40 A/R; all with a V-band outlet

Notes

The turbine housing is not included; Garrett lists seven GTX55 turbine housings for 5533 and 5544 cores
Every GTX55 housing Garrett lists is free float, so an external wastegate is required
The Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately
Garrett states that running above 84,000 rpm is at the owner’s risk and can cause damage and premature failure
The larger GTX5544R Gen II uses the same GTX55 turbine housings

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. Rest assured that any order you place on line will be at zero risk to you in this area. If in the event your order cannot be fulfilled at the original intended website price we will offer you a 100% refund, no questions asked. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
