When do I need a reverse rotation GTX3071R Gen II Super Core?

On a twin-turbo engine where the two turbochargers are mirrored. One side runs a standard core and the other runs this reverse rotation GTX3071R Gen II Super Core, so inlets and outlets point the same way relative to each bank. A single-turbo setup should use the standard rotation core instead.

What horsepower does Garrett give the reverse rotation version?

The reverse rotation page lists 340 to 650 horsepower per turbocharger on 1.8L to 3.0L, slightly below the 675 shown for the standard core. Garrett calculates these ratings from compressor choke flow as potential flywheel horsepower, so a matched pair on a twin-turbo engine is sized per cylinder bank.

Which turbine housings fit this reverse rotation core?

Garrett lists three reverse rotation GT30 housings, all V-band inlet and outlet with no internal wastegate: 0.61, 0.83 and 1.01 A/R. Standard rotation housings will not work. Each bank will also need its own external wastegate because none of these housings has a gate.

Is anything different inside compared with the standard core?

The aerodynamic sizes match: 54mm compressor inducer, 71mm exducer, 60mm turbine inducer and 55mm exducer, on an 8mm dual ceramic ball bearing. The difference is the direction of rotation, so the wheels and housings are mirrored and cannot be swapped with standard rotation parts.

Does Garrett sell this core on its own?

Garrett notes on its reverse rotation page that these GTX3071R units are sold as assembly kits, meaning super core plus turbine housing. Turn 14 lists this super core part number separately, so BA can supply it for an owner who already has reverse rotation housings in service.

Description

Garrett GTX3071R Gen II Super Core, 54mm Reverse Rotation

Garrett’s GTX3071R Gen II Super Core in reverse rotation is the mirror-image GTX3071R, built so a twin-turbo engine can run one standard and one reverse unit with symmetrical plumbing. Garrett’s reverse rotation page rates it at 340 to 650 horsepower per turbocharger on engines from 1.8L to 3.0L, with the same 54mm Gen II compressor and 60mm turbine as the standard core. It makes sense on a twin-turbo V6 or V8 where each bank needs a responsive GT30 frame turbo. A single-turbo build has no use for it and should take the standard rotation core.

Reverse Rotation Housings

A reverse rotation core needs reverse rotation turbine housings. Garrett lists three for the GTX3071R Gen II, all V-band inlet and outlet and free float: 0.61, 0.83 and 1.01 A/R. The standard rotation T3 and wastegated GT30 kits do not fit this core, so plan each bank’s manifold around the V-band reverse housings and external wastegates.

Features

8mm dual ceramic ball bearing cartridge, the same as the standard core
Gen II compressor aerodynamics with a machined inlet, outlet and ported shroud
Fully machined speed sensor port in the compressor housing

Specifications

Garrett turbo reference: 5455
Compressor inducer and exducer: 54mm and 71mm
Turbine inducer and exducer: 60mm and 55mm
Maximum turbocharger speed: 140,000 rpm
Rotation: Reverse

Applications

The GTX3071R Gen II Super Core in reverse rotation is not vehicle specific. Garrett sizes it per turbocharger:

Engine displacement: 1.8L to 3.0L
Power range: 340 to 650 horsepower (Garrett rating)
Garrett reverse rotation kits: 0.61, 0.83 and 1.01 A/R, V-band inlet and outlet, free float

Notes

The turbine housing is not included, and only reverse rotation housings fit
An external wastegate is required, because every reverse rotation housing Garrett lists is free float
The Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately
Garrett states that running above 140,000 rpm is at the owner’s risk and can cause damage and premature failure

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
