Do I need the 1.21 A/R G35 Turbine Housing Kit?

Only for the largest single-turbo builds, typically a V8 near 5.5L pushing a G35-1050 to the top of its rating. The 1.21 A/R G35 Turbine Housing Kit minimizes back pressure at maximum flow. On smaller engines it spools too late, and the 1.01 A/R V-band housing makes more sense.

Will a 1.21 A/R housing make more power than a 1.01?

Only on an engine able to use it. Peak power is limited mainly by the compressor, which Garrett rates at up to 1050 horsepower on the G35-1050. A bigger housing helps by cutting back pressure near that limit, but if the engine cannot spool the turbine early enough, overall performance suffers.

What wastegate setup does it need?

An external wastegate on the exhaust manifold, as this free-float housing has no wastegate port. With the high exhaust flow a 1.21 A/R build produces, wastegate size matters, so choose a gate rated for the power target and the boost pressure.

Is the 1.21 A/R housing practical on a street car?

Rarely. On a G35, a 1.21 A/R pushes boost onset high into the rev range, which suits sustained high-load use on a very large engine more than daily driving. Street builds with a G35 generally get a better balance from the 0.83 or 1.01 A/R V-band housings.

Is there a reverse rotation 1.21 A/R G35 housing?

Yes. Garrett lists it as part 740902-0115 for reverse-rotation G35 cores. This part, 740902-0105, is the standard-rotation version, and the two are not interchangeable, since each volute spirals in the direction its turbine wheel turns. On a mirrored twin-turbo engine, one of each would be used.

Description

Garrett G35 Turbine Housing Kit, 1.21 A/R V-Band Free Float

Garrett’s G35 Turbine Housing Kit in 1.21 A/R is the largest housing in the G35 range, a V-band free-float casting for standard-rotation cores that Garrett lists as part 740902-0105 for the G35-900, G35-1050 and G-Series II G35-990. It is meant for the biggest single-turbo G35 builds: a V8 near the 5.5L top of the G35 displacement range, running a G35-1050 toward its 1050 horsepower rating, where turbine flow is the limit. For nearly anything smaller it is oversized, and boost will arrive too late for road use.

Largest G35 Volute

At 1.21 A/R the housing places the least restriction between the engine and the 68mm G35 turbine wheel. That keeps back pressure low at maximum flow, which is where a big-displacement engine on a G35-1050 makes its power. The cost is later spool, and an external wastegate is needed to manage boost.

Features

1.21 A/R, the largest G35 housing
V-band inlet and outlet
Free float, clockable through 360 degrees on the center housing V-band

Specifications

Garrett part number: 740902-0105
A/R: 1.21
Turbine inlet and outlet: V-band and V-band
Wastegate: External (free float)
Rotation: Standard
Material: Stainless steel, rated to 1050C (1922F)

Applications

Garrett lists this G35 Turbine Housing Kit for these standard-rotation super cores, rated from 550 to 1050 horsepower on 2.0L to 5.5L engines:

Garrett G35-900: 880695-5001S
Garrett G35-990 G-Series II: 934123-5001S
Garrett G35-1050: 880695-5002S

Notes

An external wastegate is required, because this free-float housing has no internal wastegate
The G35 super core is sold separately
Standard rotation; the reverse-rotation 1.21 A/R V-band housing is part 740902-0115
Garrett states that running the G35-1050 above 130,000 rpm is at the owner’s risk; a speed sensor kit is sold separately

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. Rest assured that any order you place on line will be at zero risk to you in this area. If in the event your order cannot be fulfilled at the original intended website price we will offer you a 100% refund, no questions asked. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
