How much power can the GXR50-88 Super Core support?

Garrett rates the GXR50-88 Super Core up to 2050 horsepower, with a range of 500 to 2050 on engines from 2.5L to 11.0L. The rating is calculated from compressor choke flow and represents potential flywheel horsepower, so it describes compressor capacity rather than a guaranteed engine figure.

How does it compare with the G50-1900?

Garrett quotes 8 percent more compressor flow for the GXR50-88 than for the G50-1900, plus improved pressure ratio capability for higher boost. Garrett lists G50 turbine housings for it, so the exhaust side of a G50 build can usually stay in place when the core changes.

Should I choose the GXR50-88 or a GXR55?

Stay on the GXR50-88 if the power target sits under about 2050 horsepower and the build already uses G50 T6 housings. The GXR55 cores start between 1000 and 1500 horsepower depending on model and reach 2800, with a larger turbine and engines up to 12.0L, which suits bigger targets.

Do I need an external wastegate?

Yes. The four G50 housings Garrett lists, 0.96, 1.08, 1.23 and 1.39 A/R, all have a T6 inlet and V-band outlet with no internal wastegate. Boost control comes from an external gate on the manifold, sized for the exhaust flow of the engine at its power target.

What is the maximum turbocharger speed?

93,000 rpm, per Garrett. Operating above it is at the risk of the owner and can cause damage and premature failure. With an 88.9mm inducer on the compressor, a speed sensor in the flange-style port gives the tuner real data, and the Garrett kit is sold separately.

Description

Garrett G-XRace GXR50-88 Super Core, 88.9mm Inducer, 94mm Turbine

Garrett’s GXR50-88 Super Core carries the biggest inducer on the GXR50 frame, 88.9mm on a 123mm exducer XBoost wheel, with the 99mm by 94mm GXR50 turbine underneath. Garrett codes it 8894, rates it at 500 to 2050 horsepower for 2.5L to 11.0L, and quotes 8 percent more compressor flow than the G50-1900. It is built for engines chasing past 1850 horsepower on a T6 GXR50 setup without moving to the GXR55 frame. With the largest inducer of the three, it builds boost later than the GXR50-80, so a combination that needs response belongs on the smaller core.

Construction

The center housing and backplate are a single aluminum piece, which Garrett says reduces weight, and the flange-style port takes a speed sensor without further machining. Garrett lists the GXR50 design as patented.

Features

88.9mm inducer, the largest on the GXR50 frame
8 percent more compressor flow than the G50-1900
One-piece aluminum center housing and backplate
Uses G50 T6 inlet turbine housings

Specifications

Garrett turbo reference: 8894
Compressor inducer and exducer: 88.9mm and 123mm
Turbine inducer and exducer: 99mm and 94mm
Maximum turbocharger speed: 93,000 rpm
Horsepower rating: Up to 2050 (Garrett rating)

Applications

The GXR50-88 Super Core is not vehicle specific. Garrett sizes it by engine and output:

Engine displacement: 2.5L to 11.0L
Power range: 500 to 2050 horsepower (Garrett rating)
Garrett turbine kits: G50 0.96, 1.08, 1.23 and 1.39 A/R, T6 inlet, V-band outlet, external wastegate

Notes

The turbine housing is not included; Garrett’s matching G50 turbine housing kits are sold separately
An external wastegate is required, because every turbine housing Garrett lists for this core is free float
The Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately
Garrett states that running above 93,000 rpm is at the owner’s risk and can result in damage and premature failure
Smaller-inducer cores are listed in the GXR50 range

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
