Should I water cool the GVW-60 60mm External Wastegate?

On most large engines it is worth it. The GVW-60 60mm External Wastegate actuator ran at 270C uncooled and 130C cooled in the Garrett thermal cycle test. Connect coolant to both AN-3 ports to form a loop, as Garrett requires, or plug both if running uncooled.

What is the GVW-60 built from?

The valve housing is high-temperature stainless steel rated to 1050C. Garrett pairs it with a Nomex reinforced elastomer diaphragm, 17-7 PH stainless steel springs and a fully machined 6061 aluminum actuator cover, anodized blue on this part. The same materials are used across all four GVW sizes.

Yes. Garrett designs the valve and bushing as replaceable components to increase service life and lists spare parts such as the valve seat and weld flanges. A gate that has worn after heavy use can be refreshed with those parts.

How much bigger is it than the GVW-50?

The valve grows from 50mm to 60mm in diameter, so the GVW-60 can pass more exhaust at the same boost target. Spring range, materials, cooling ports, finishes and included hardware are shared, so the decision rests on how much flow the engine sends through the gate.

Can boost be raised above the spring?

Yes. Fit a boost control solenoid to the air ports, which use M10x1.0 banjo fittings with hose barbs for 6mm hose. Garrett cautions that a two-port solenoid setup may not produce a smooth boost curve, so agree the plumbing with the tuner.

Description

Garrett GVW-60 60mm External Wastegate Kit, Blue

Garrett’s GVW-60 60mm External Wastegate in blue brings Garrett’s biggest valve to builds that want a blue anodized actuator cover. Large engines generate the heat that makes the GVW coolant ports earn their place: Garrett measured the actuator body at 270C (518F) without cooling and 130C (266F) with it in a thermal cycle test. The valve and bushing are replaceable for a long service life. It is more than an engine needs if a GVW-50 can already hold boost, and the right call when the 50mm gate is at its limit.

Cooling

Two M8x1.0 coolant ports sit on the actuator body, marked with etched water symbols, and Garrett supplies AN-3 fittings for them. Garrett states that both ports must be used to create a loop, and rates the cooling for up to a 52 percent reduction in actuator body temperature.

Features

60mm valve for very high exhaust flow
Liquid-cooled actuator, up to 52 percent cooler body temperature
Replaceable valve and bushing
Blue anodized cover on the GVW-60 60mm External Wastegate

Specifications

Valve diameter: 60mm
Base pressure as shipped: 1 bar (14.5 psi)
Spring base pressure range: 0.2 to 1.6 bar (3 to 23 psi)
Valve housing: High-temperature stainless steel, rated to 1050C (1922F)
Actuator cover: Machined 6061 aluminum, blue anodized
Air ports: M10x1.0 to hose barb for 6mm (0.25 in) ID hose
Water ports: M8x1.0 to AN-3

What’s Included

GVW-60 wastegate, blue
Springs
Inlet and outlet weld flanges
Inlet and outlet V-band clamps with fasteners
Water fittings, banjo air fittings and port plugs

Applications

The GVW-60 60mm External Wastegate is not vehicle specific. It mounts to a wastegate runner on the exhaust manifold:

Turbine housing type: Free-float housings with no internal wastegate
Mounting position: Manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, ideally at 45 degrees
Boost control: Springs alone, or a solenoid on the air ports

Notes

Garrett states the wastegate must never be mounted to the turbine housing
Springs are under pressure; Garrett advises eye protection and installation by a qualified technician
The GVW-60 is also sold in red, black and silver, and Garrett makes 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm GVW sizes

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
