When should I choose the GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate?

When the turbocharger and engine make more exhaust flow than a 45mm valve can manage at the boost target. The GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate suits large-frame turbochargers on free-float housings. For the very highest flow builds Garrett offers the GVW-60, and smaller builds suit the GVW-40 or GVW-45.

What is included with the GVW-50?

The gate comes with its springs, inlet and outlet weld flanges, V-band clamps with bolts and nuts, a valve seat, water fittings, banjo air fittings with washers and port plugs. The builder provides the manifold runner, the dump or return pipe and any coolant or boost lines.

What boost can the springs hold?

The GVW-50 springs cover 0.2 to 1.6 bar of base pressure, or 3 to 23 psi, and the gate ships at 1 bar. Higher boost targets are reached with a boost controller on the air ports, with the springs setting the floor.

How should the GVW-50 be mounted?

On a runner from the manifold or collector that meets the exhaust flow at about 45 degrees with a smooth transition. Garrett states that 90 degrees can halve flow capacity and cause over boosting, and that the gate must never be mounted to the turbine housing.

Is red the only colour?

No. Garrett makes the GVW-50 in red, blue, black and silver. The colour is the anodized finish on the actuator cover only, so all four share the same 50mm valve, stainless housing, springs and included hardware. Pick the finish that matches the rest of the engine bay.

Description

Garrett GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate Kit, Red

Garrett’s GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate in red carries a 50mm valve for engines and turbochargers whose exhaust flow outgrows the GVW-40 and GVW-45, with a red anodized actuator cover over a high-temperature stainless body. It suits large-frame turbochargers on free-float turbine housings, where the gate must divert a large share of exhaust around the turbine to hold boost. Springs run from 0.2 to 1.6 bar, and Garrett includes the weld flanges and V-band clamps. On a small engine with a compact turbocharger it is more valve than needed, and a GVW-40 or GVW-45 packages more easily.

Spring Setup

Garrett assembles the GVW-50 at 1 bar (14.5 psi) and publishes a spring chart for the combinations between 0.2 and 1.6 bar (3 and 23 psi). The figures assume a 1:1 boost to backpressure ratio, so the actual manifold pressure on a given engine can sit above or below the spring rating.

Features

50mm valve for larger turbochargers and higher exhaust flow
Spring base pressure from 0.2 to 1.6 bar
Liquid-cooled actuator ports and replaceable valve and bushing
Red anodized cover on the GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate

Specifications

Valve diameter: 50mm
Base pressure as shipped: 1 bar (14.5 psi)
Spring base pressure range: 0.2 to 1.6 bar (3 to 23 psi)
Valve housing: High-temperature stainless steel, rated to 1050C (1922F)
Actuator cover: Machined 6061 aluminum, red anodized
Air ports: M10x1.0 to hose barb for 6mm (0.25 in) ID hose
Water ports: M8x1.0 to AN-3

What’s Included

GVW-50 wastegate, red
Springs
Inlet and outlet weld flanges
Inlet and outlet V-band clamps with fasteners
Water fittings, banjo air fittings and port plugs

Applications

The GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate is not vehicle specific. It mounts to a wastegate runner on the exhaust manifold:

Turbine housing type: Free-float housings with no internal wastegate
Mounting position: Manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, ideally at 45 degrees
Boost control: Springs alone, or a solenoid on the air ports

Notes

Garrett states the wastegate must never be mounted to the turbine housing
Springs are under pressure; Garrett advises eye protection and installation by a qualified technician
The GVW-50 is also sold in blue, black and silver, and Garrett makes 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm GVW sizes

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
