Is the GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate the right size for my build?

The GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate suits mid-size turbochargers where a 40mm valve would struggle to hold boost. Garrett does not publish power ratings per valve size, so size it against exhaust flow and boost target. Large engines on big-frame turbochargers are better matched to the GVW-50 or GVW-60.

What spring range does the GVW-45 cover?

From 0.2 bar to 1.6 bar, which is 3 to 23 psi, with the gate shipped at 1 bar. Garrett publishes a spring chart for the combinations, calculated at a 1:1 boost to backpressure ratio, so expect real manifold boost to differ somewhat on the engine.

Where should it be mounted?

On the exhaust manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, on a runner joining the flow at about 45 degrees with a smooth transition. Garrett warns that a 90 degree joint can halve flow capacity and lead to over boosting, and it must never be mounted to the turbine housing.

Does blue anodizing affect function?

No. The blue is the anodized finish on the machined 6061 aluminum actuator cover. Garrett offers the same GVW-45 in red, black and silver, with identical valve, housing, springs and hardware, so colour is chosen for looks alone, for example to match other anodized parts in the engine bay.

Can the GVW-45 be rebuilt?

Yes. Garrett made the valve and bushing replaceable to extend service life and lists spare parts including the valve seat and fittings. Follow the Garrett install guide torque values when reassembling, such as 30 Nm for the bushing and 10 Nm for the valve stem nut.

Description

Garrett GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate Kit, Blue

Garrett’s GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate in blue is the second size in the GVW range, a 45mm valve with a blue anodized actuator cover for builds that need more flow than the GVW-40 without the bulk of the larger gates. Garrett designs the valve and bushing as replaceable parts and specifies a Nomex reinforced diaphragm and 17-7 PH stainless springs, so the gate is meant to be serviced over a long life. It will be undersized on a big engine running a large-frame turbocharger at a low boost target, and it is more gate than a small turbocharger strictly needs.

Service Life

Garrett lists the GVW valve, bushing, valve seat, weld flanges and port fittings as spare parts. Because the wear items can be replaced, a gate that has seen years of heat cycles can be refreshed rather than discarded, keeping the same mounting hardware on the manifold.

Features

45mm valve for mid-size turbocharger builds
Replaceable valve and bushing, with spare parts listed by Garrett
Springs set to 1 bar, adjustable from 0.2 to 1.6 bar
Blue anodized cover on the GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate

Specifications

Valve diameter: 45mm
Base pressure as shipped: 1 bar (14.5 psi)
Spring base pressure range: 0.2 to 1.6 bar (3 to 23 psi)
Valve housing: High-temperature stainless steel, rated to 1050C (1922F)
Actuator cover: Machined 6061 aluminum, blue anodized
Air ports: M10x1.0 to hose barb for 6mm (0.25 in) ID hose
Water ports: M8x1.0 to AN-3

What’s Included

GVW-45 wastegate, blue
Springs
Inlet and outlet weld flanges
Inlet and outlet V-band clamps with fasteners
Water fittings, banjo air fittings and port plugs

Applications

The GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate is not vehicle specific. It mounts to a wastegate runner on the exhaust manifold:

Turbine housing type: Free-float housings with no internal wastegate
Mounting position: Manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, ideally at 45 degrees
Boost control: Springs alone, or a solenoid on the air ports

Notes

Garrett states the wastegate must never be mounted to the turbine housing
Springs are under pressure; Garrett advises eye protection and installation by a qualified technician
The GVW-45 is also sold in red, black and silver, and Garrett makes 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm GVW sizes

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
