Does the GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate need water cooling?

Not always. Cooling is optional on the GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate, but Garrett rates the coolant ports for up to a 52 percent drop in actuator body temperature. On a big engine with the gate close to the manifold, connecting both AN-3 ports as a loop is worth the effort.

What materials does Garrett use?

A high-temperature stainless steel valve housing rated to 1050C, a high-temperature Nomex reinforced elastomer diaphragm, 17-7 PH stainless steel springs and a fully machined 6061 aluminum actuator cover, anodized blue on this version. Garrett also states the design was CFD tested for flow and thermal efficiency.

Which parts wear and can be replaced?

The valve and the bushing it slides in are the main wear items, and Garrett designs both to be replaced. Spare parts listed by Garrett also include the valve seat, weld flanges and port fittings, so the gate can be refreshed instead of renewed.

Will it work with an electronic boost controller?

Yes. The actuator air ports take banjo hose barb fittings for 6mm hose, so a boost control solenoid can raise boost above the spring pressure. Garrett notes that a two-port solenoid setup may not give a smooth boost curve, so discuss the layout with the tuner.

How does it compare with the GVW-45 and GVW-60?

The GVW-50 sits between them. Its 50mm valve passes more exhaust than the 45mm GVW-45, and the GVW-60 passes more again. All three share the same 0.2 to 1.6 bar spring range, materials, cooling ports and included hardware, so the exhaust flow of the build is what decides between them.

Description

Garrett GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate Kit, Blue

Garrett’s GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate in blue gives a large turbocharger build a 50mm valve with a blue anodized 6061 aluminum actuator cover, plus the service features Garrett builds into every GVW: a replaceable valve and bushing, a Nomex reinforced diaphragm and 17-7 PH stainless springs. Garrett ships it at 1 bar base pressure and allows 0.2 to 1.6 bar, with air ports ready for a boost controller. It fits engines whose exhaust flow is too much for a 45mm valve. For the very largest builds the GVW-60 adds headroom, and small engines do not need a 50mm gate.

Design

Garrett states the GVW range was CFD tested for maximum flow and thermal efficiency. The valve housing is high-temperature stainless steel rated to 1050C (1922F), and the actuator cover is fully machined from 6061 aluminum before anodizing.

Features

50mm valve in a CFD-tested stainless housing
Nomex reinforced diaphragm and 17-7 PH stainless springs
Air ports for a boost control solenoid
Blue anodized cover on the GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate

Specifications

Valve diameter: 50mm
Base pressure as shipped: 1 bar (14.5 psi)
Spring base pressure range: 0.2 to 1.6 bar (3 to 23 psi)
Valve housing: High-temperature stainless steel, rated to 1050C (1922F)
Actuator cover: Machined 6061 aluminum, blue anodized
Air ports: M10x1.0 to hose barb for 6mm (0.25 in) ID hose
Water ports: M8x1.0 to AN-3

What’s Included

GVW-50 wastegate, blue
Springs
Inlet and outlet weld flanges
Inlet and outlet V-band clamps with fasteners
Water fittings, banjo air fittings and port plugs

Applications

The GVW-50 50mm External Wastegate is not vehicle specific. It mounts to a wastegate runner on the exhaust manifold:

Turbine housing type: Free-float housings with no internal wastegate
Mounting position: Manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, ideally at 45 degrees
Boost control: Springs alone, or a solenoid on the air ports

Notes

Garrett states the wastegate must never be mounted to the turbine housing
Springs are under pressure; Garrett advises eye protection and installation by a qualified technician
The GVW-50 is also sold in red, black and silver, and Garrett makes 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm GVW sizes

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
