Do I have to water cool the GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate?

No, cooling is optional, but it helps in hot installations. Garrett measured the GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate actuator at 270C without coolant and 130C with it in a thermal cycle test. If you plumb it, both water ports must be connected so coolant flows through the body as a loop.

Can I bolt the wastegate to my turbine housing?

No. Garrett states that the GVW must never be mounted to the turbine housing. It belongs on the exhaust manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, on a runner that meets the flow at around 45 degrees, and it is meant for use with a free-float turbine housing.

Which parts can be replaced when it wears?

Garrett designs the valve and the bushing as replaceable components, and lists spare parts such as the valve seat, weld flanges and port fittings. Rebuilding with those parts extends service life instead of replacing the whole gate when the valve or guide wears after long use.

What hose do the air ports take?

The air ports use M10x1.0 threads with banjo fittings to a hose barb sized for 6mm, or 0.25 in, inside diameter hose. That suits typical boost reference and solenoid lines. Unused ports are closed with the plugs Garrett supplies in the kit.

How does the GVW-40 compare with the GVW-45?

The GVW-45 has a 45mm valve, so it can pass more exhaust and holds boost more easily on larger turbochargers. The GVW-40 has the higher spring ceiling, 1.7 bar against 1.6 bar. Materials, cooling, colours and included hardware are otherwise the same.

Description

Garrett GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate Kit, Blue

Garrett’s GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate in blue pairs Garrett’s smallest wastegate valve with a blue anodized 6061 aluminum actuator cover and the same hardware as the other three colours: weld flanges, V-band clamps, springs and fittings. Its liquid-cooled actuator ports are the detail to note; in Garrett’s thermal cycle test, coolant brought actuator body temperature down from 270C (518F) to 130C (266F). That makes it a sound choice for a compact engine bay where the gate sits close to hot exhaust. On a big-frame turbocharger feeding a large engine, a 40mm valve is undersized.

Liquid Cooling

The GVW actuator body has two coolant ports with M8x1.0 to AN-3 fittings, marked with etched water symbols. Garrett states that if the gate is water cooled, both ports must be used to form a coolant loop, and rates the cooling for up to a 52 percent drop in actuator body temperature.

Features

40mm valve for small and mid-size turbocharger builds
Liquid-cooled actuator ports with AN-3 water fittings
Replaceable valve and bushing for a longer service life
Blue anodized cover on the GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate

Specifications

Valve diameter: 40mm
Base pressure as shipped: 1 bar (14.5 psi)
Spring base pressure range: 0.2 to 1.7 bar (3 to 25 psi)
Valve housing: High-temperature stainless steel, rated to 1050C (1922F)
Actuator cover: Machined 6061 aluminum, blue anodized
Air ports: M10x1.0 to hose barb for 6mm (0.25 in) ID hose
Water ports: M8x1.0 to AN-3

What’s Included

GVW-40 wastegate, blue
Springs
Inlet and outlet weld flanges
Inlet and outlet V-band clamps with fasteners
Water fittings, banjo air fittings and port plugs

Applications

The GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate is not vehicle specific. It mounts to a wastegate runner on the exhaust manifold:

Turbine housing type: Free-float housings with no internal wastegate
Mounting position: Manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, ideally at 45 degrees
Boost control: Springs alone, or a solenoid on the air ports

Notes

Garrett states the wastegate must never be mounted to the turbine housing
Springs are under pressure; Garrett advises eye protection and installation by a qualified technician
The GVW-40 is also sold in red, black and silver, and Garrett makes 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm GVW sizes

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
