What is supplied with the G42-1585 G-Series II CHRA?

The rotating center section only: center housing and backplate, bearing cartridge, shaft and turbine wheel, and the 79mm compressor wheel. It needs a G42 compressor housing and a G42 turbine housing. Garrett sells the same core with the compressor housing fitted as the G42-1585 super core.

What power rating does Garrett give the G42-1585?

Garrett rates the G42-1585 G-Series II CHRA at 475 to 1,585 horsepower on 2.0L to 7.0L engines. The number is calculated from compressor choke flow and represents potential flywheel horsepower. Fuel, boost, intercooling, the turbine housing and the calibration decide the real figure.

G42-1585 or G42-1325: which suits my build?

Both share the 82mm G42 turbine. The G42-1325 uses a 73mm compressor and is the more responsive choice for engines up to the low 1,000s. The G42-1585 steps up to a 79mm compressor for engines that need more airflow at high boost, typically large V8 race and drag builds.

Which turbine housing A/R should I use?

Garrett lists the G42 turbine kits in 1.01, 1.15 and 1.28 A/R with V-band or divided T4 inlets. Smaller A/R brings boost on sooner; larger A/R reduces back pressure at high rpm. With a 79mm compressor, most builds lean toward the larger housings, but check the Garrett flow maps for the engine.

What is the maximum shaft speed?

Garrett sets the maximum allowable speed for the G42-1585 at 120,000 rpm and warns that running above it is at the risk of the owner and can cause premature failure. A speed sensor in the compressor housing, sold separately, is the practical way to confirm the turbocharger stays inside its limit.

Description

Garrett G42-1585 G-Series II CHRA, 79mm Compressor

Garrett’s G42-1585 G-Series II CHRA puts a 79mm compressor inducer on the 82mm G42 turbine, sold as a bare center housing rotating assembly. With a Garrett rating of 475 to 1,585 horsepower on 2.0L to 7.0L, it is the core for big-displacement V8 and drag builds where the G42-1325 has run out of compressor. The turbine is the same as the G42-1325, so the difference is all on the intake side: more airflow at high boost and rpm, in exchange for a compressor that needs real load to work efficiently. For street engines and anything below about 1,000 horsepower, the G42-1325 or a G40 is the better choice.

Compressor Side

The 79mm wheel uses G-Series II aerodynamics, which Garrett states give up to 10 percent more flow than G-Series Gen I at peak pressure ratio and peak turbo speed, with better efficiency at high flow. Because the compressor housings keep the Gen I contour, a first-generation owner can keep the existing compressor cover when moving to this core.

Features

79mm compressor inducer and 98mm exducer, trim 65
One-piece center housing and backplate with twin piston rings on both sides of the shaft
Same G42 turbine kits as the G42-1325

Specifications

Compressor inducer and exducer: 79mm and 98mm
Compressor trim: 65
Turbine inducer and exducer: 82mm and 75mm
Turbine trim: 84
Maximum turbocharger speed: 120,000 rpm
Matching super core: 938339-5003S

Applications

The G42-1585 G-Series II CHRA is not vehicle specific. Garrett sizes it by engine and output:

Engine displacement: 2.0L to 7.0L
Power range: 475 to 1,585 horsepower (Garrett rating)
Garrett G42 turbine kits: 1.01, 1.15 and 1.28 A/R external wastegate housings with V-band inlets or divided T4 inlets, all with V-band outlets

Notes

Compressor and turbine housings are not included; the G42-1585 super core includes the compressor housing
An external wastegate is required, as every G42 turbine kit Garrett lists is external wastegate
Garrett states that running above 120,000 rpm is at the owner’s risk and can cause premature failure
The Garrett speed sensor kit is sold separately

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. Rest assured that any order you place on line will be at zero risk to you in this area. If in the event your order cannot be fulfilled at the original intended website price we will offer you a 100% refund, no questions asked. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
