How does the GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate differ from the GVW-40 and GVW-50?

By valve size. The GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate has a 45mm valve, between the 40mm GVW-40 and the 50mm GVW-50, so it passes more exhaust than the smaller gate and less than the larger one. Its springs reach 1.6 bar, against 1.7 bar on the GVW-40.

What hardware is included?

Garrett includes the springs, inlet and outlet weld flanges, V-band clamps with bolts and nuts, a valve seat, water fittings, banjo air fittings and plugs. The builder supplies the manifold runner, the dump or return pipe, coolant and boost lines.

Is water cooling worth plumbing?

On a hot or tightly packaged install, yes. Garrett states the coolant ports can cut actuator body temperature by up to 52 percent, and both ports must be connected to form a loop. On an open, well-ventilated install it remains optional.

What temperatures is it built for?

Garrett rates the stainless valve housing for exhaust peaks up to 1050C, or 1922F. The diaphragm is a high-temperature Nomex reinforced elastomer, and the actuator body reached 270C uncooled and 130C cooled in the Garrett thermal cycle test, which is why cooling is worth considering on hot installs.

Any precautions when changing springs?

Yes. Garrett warns that the springs are under pressure and can cause injury if installed wrongly, and advises eye protection. Each spring must sit in its groove in the diaphragm and cap, with the longest spring aligned to its matching groove, or the wastegate can fail.

Description

Garrett GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate Kit, Red

Garrett’s GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate in red steps up from the GVW-40 with a 45mm valve, giving more exhaust flow capacity for mid-size turbochargers and engines where a 40mm gate starts to run short. The red anodized actuator cover sits over a high-temperature stainless valve housing, and Garrett includes the springs, weld flanges, V-band clamps and fittings. Spring base pressure runs from 0.2 to 1.6 bar, a slightly lower ceiling than the GVW-40. For a very large engine on a big-frame turbocharger, the GVW-50 or GVW-60 will hold boost more easily.

Materials

Garrett builds the valve housing from high-temperature stainless steel rated to 1050C (1922F), the diaphragm from a Nomex reinforced elastomer, the springs from 17-7 PH stainless steel and the actuator cover from fully machined 6061 aluminum, anodized red on this version.

Features

45mm valve, a step up in flow from the GVW-40
Stainless valve housing rated to 1050C (1922F)
Liquid-cooled actuator ports and replaceable valve and bushing
Red anodized cover on the GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate

Specifications

Valve diameter: 45mm
Base pressure as shipped: 1 bar (14.5 psi)
Spring base pressure range: 0.2 to 1.6 bar (3 to 23 psi)
Valve housing: High-temperature stainless steel, rated to 1050C (1922F)
Actuator cover: Machined 6061 aluminum, red anodized
Air ports: M10x1.0 to hose barb for 6mm (0.25 in) ID hose
Water ports: M8x1.0 to AN-3

What’s Included

GVW-45 wastegate, red
Springs
Inlet and outlet weld flanges
Inlet and outlet V-band clamps with fasteners
Water fittings, banjo air fittings and port plugs

Applications

The GVW-45 45mm External Wastegate is not vehicle specific. It mounts to a wastegate runner on the exhaust manifold:

Turbine housing type: Free-float housings with no internal wastegate
Mounting position: Manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, ideally at 45 degrees
Boost control: Springs alone, or a solenoid on the air ports

Notes

Garrett states the wastegate must never be mounted to the turbine housing
Springs are under pressure; Garrett advises eye protection and installation by a qualified technician
The GVW-45 is also sold in blue, black and silver, and Garrett makes 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm GVW sizes

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
