What is the GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate made from?

The valve housing is high-temperature stainless steel that Garrett rates to 1050C. The GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate uses a Nomex reinforced elastomer diaphragm, 17-7 PH stainless springs and a fully machined 6061 aluminum actuator cover, anodized black on this version.

Can I run a boost controller with this wastegate?

Yes. The actuator has air ports with banjo hose barb fittings for a boost control solenoid, and the springs set the minimum boost. Garrett notes that a two-port solenoid setup may not give a smooth boost curve, so plan the plumbing with the tuner before installation.

Is it safe to change the springs myself?

It can be done with care, but Garrett warns that the springs are under pressure and can cause injury if installed incorrectly, and advises eye protection. Springs must sit in their grooves in the diaphragm and cap. Garrett recommends installation by a qualified automotive technician.

Are the weld flanges included?

Yes. Garrett supplies inlet and outlet weld flanges with the V-band clamps, springs, fittings and plugs, so the fabricator welds the flanges to the manifold runner and the dump or return pipe and then clamps the gate in place. No extra adapters are needed for a standard install.

Is 40mm big enough for my turbocharger?

For small and mid-size turbochargers, usually yes. Garrett does not publish a power rating per valve size, but a larger valve passes more exhaust. If the engine is large, the turbocharger is a big frame or the boost target is low, step up to the GVW-50 or GVW-60.

Description

Garrett GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate Kit, Black

Garrett’s GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate in black is a compact external gate for builds running a free-float turbine housing, finished with a black anodized actuator cover. Garrett ships it at 1 bar base pressure and makes the valve and bushing replaceable, so a worn gate can be rebuilt rather than thrown away. The 40mm valve suits small and mid-size turbochargers, and its air ports accept a boost control solenoid when the target runs above spring pressure. It is the wrong size for an engine whose exhaust flow would overwhelm a 40mm valve at a low boost target.

Built to Be Serviced

Garrett CFD tested the GVW design for flow and thermal efficiency, then built it from parts meant to last: a Nomex reinforced high-temperature elastomer diaphragm, 17-7 PH stainless steel springs and a valve and bushing that can be replaced when they wear.

Features

40mm valve in a high-temperature stainless steel housing
Replaceable valve and bushing, Nomex reinforced diaphragm
Air ports ready for a boost control solenoid
Black anodized cover on the GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate

Specifications

Valve diameter: 40mm
Base pressure as shipped: 1 bar (14.5 psi)
Spring base pressure range: 0.2 to 1.7 bar (3 to 25 psi)
Valve housing: High-temperature stainless steel, rated to 1050C (1922F)
Actuator cover: Machined 6061 aluminum, black anodized
Air ports: M10x1.0 to hose barb for 6mm (0.25 in) ID hose
Water ports: M8x1.0 to AN-3

What’s Included

GVW-40 wastegate, black
Springs
Inlet and outlet weld flanges
Inlet and outlet V-band clamps with fasteners
Water fittings, banjo air fittings and port plugs

Applications

The GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate is not vehicle specific. It mounts to a wastegate runner on the exhaust manifold:

Turbine housing type: Free-float housings with no internal wastegate
Mounting position: Manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, ideally at 45 degrees
Boost control: Springs alone, or a solenoid on the air ports

Notes

Garrett states the wastegate must never be mounted to the turbine housing
Springs are under pressure; Garrett advises eye protection and installation by a qualified technician
The GVW-40 is also sold in red, blue and silver, and Garrett makes 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm GVW sizes

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
