When is the GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate the right size?

When the turbocharger and engine are small to mid-size and the gate only has to divert a moderate share of exhaust. The GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate packages easily and offers the highest spring base pressure in the range. Large engines with big-frame turbochargers usually need the 50mm or 60mm valve.

How high can I set the base pressure?

Up to 1.7 bar, or 25 psi, with the stiffest spring combination, and as low as 0.2 bar, or 3 psi. Garrett ships the gate set at 1 bar. Spring combinations are listed in the Garrett spring chart, and actual boost can differ from spring pressure with exhaust backpressure.

What comes in the box?

The wastegate with springs, inlet and outlet weld flanges, V-band clamps with their bolts and nuts, a valve seat, water fittings, banjo air fittings with washers, and plugs for the unused ports. Garrett states all fasteners, springs, fittings, clamps and flanges are included.

Does the red finish change performance?

No. Garrett makes the GVW-40 in red, blue, black and silver, and the colour is the anodized finish on the aluminum actuator cover. The valve, springs, stainless housing and flanges are the same across all four, so choose the colour that suits the engine bay.

How should the wastegate be mounted?

Garrett states the ideal connection is at 45 degrees to the exhaust flow with a smooth transition. A 90 degree connection can cut flow capacity by up to 50 percent and cause over boosting, and steeper angles cut it further. The gate must never be mounted to the turbine housing.

Description

Garrett GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate Kit, Red

Garrett’s GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate in red is the smallest valve in Garrett’s GVW range, a 40mm valve in a high-temperature stainless body under a red anodized actuator cover. It suits smaller turbochargers and engines where the gate passes a modest share of exhaust, and it is the only GVW Garrett springs up to 1.7 bar, useful when a compact turbocharger runs high boost. On a large-frame turbocharger feeding a big engine, a 40mm valve can struggle to hold boost down, and the GVW-50 or GVW-60 is the safer pick.

Spring Range

Garrett ships every GVW at 1 bar (14.5 psi) base pressure. The GVW-40 can be sprung from 0.2 to 1.7 bar (3 to 25 psi), the widest range in the family, while the larger sizes top out at 1.6 bar. Garrett calculates spring pressures on a 1:1 boost to backpressure ratio, so actual manifold pressure can vary.

Features

40mm valve, the most compact gate in the GVW range
Highest spring ceiling of any GVW, up to 1.7 bar
Liquid-cooled actuator ports and replaceable valve and bushing
Red anodized actuator cover on the GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate

Specifications

Valve diameter: 40mm
Base pressure as shipped: 1 bar (14.5 psi)
Spring base pressure range: 0.2 to 1.7 bar (3 to 25 psi)
Valve housing: High-temperature stainless steel, rated to 1050C (1922F)
Actuator cover: Machined 6061 aluminum, red anodized
Air ports: M10x1.0 to hose barb for 6mm (0.25 in) ID hose
Water ports: M8x1.0 to AN-3

What’s Included

GVW-40 wastegate, red
Springs
Inlet and outlet weld flanges
Inlet and outlet V-band clamps with fasteners
Water fittings, banjo air fittings and port plugs

Applications

The GVW-40 40mm External Wastegate is not vehicle specific. It mounts to a wastegate runner on the exhaust manifold:

Turbine housing type: Free-float housings with no internal wastegate
Mounting position: Manifold or collector ahead of the turbine, ideally at 45 degrees
Boost control: Springs alone, or a solenoid on the air ports

Notes

Garrett states the wastegate must never be mounted to the turbine housing
Springs are under pressure; Garrett advises eye protection and installation by a qualified technician
The GVW-40 is also sold in blue, black and silver, and Garrett makes 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm GVW sizes

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
