Polished, balanced joints for the manual CR-Z, ready for the low-down assist of its hybrid system and the loads of autocross
Spoon Sports’ Driveshaft Set for ZF1 CR-Z suits a car whose electric motor adds torque low in the rev range, sending it through a 6-speed manual and front joints that turn with the steering. Spoon registers the set for the manual alpha grade built in Japan from early 2010 to August 2012. Behind it is Spoon’s conviction that driveshafts are made, not reinforced. Failures, in Spoon’s experience, start when an internal joint surface is marked by a hard input; it then snags, collects heat and drives its grease toward boiling until the joint seizes, and a thicker shaft changes none of that. Spoon instead polishes and balances OEM-based shafts. The CR-Z is a compact, short-wheelbase coupe, and on autocross or a tight circuit its front joints work hard. A CR-Z used for economy motoring will not reward the cost, but one being built for driving pleasure will benefit.
Spoon Sports was founded in 1988 in Suginami, Tokyo, by Tatsuru Ichishima, a former Honda race car tester and driver, with backing from Honda and Mugen. The company has raced Hondas from its first season, when Ichishima’s own Civic became the first Civic to enter the Japan Touring Car Championship, and its Type One workshop, opened in 2001, services and tunes the cars its parts are developed on. Spoon builds engine, drivetrain, exhaust, chassis and aero parts for Honda models and proves them on circuits and in endurance racing, including the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.
