Is the Complete K20C Engine for FK8 a performance upgrade?

Not in peak power, since Spoon quotes no figure. The complete K20C engine for FK8 is a precision rebuild: closer matched moving parts reduce the fine vibration in the engine, so it revs more smoothly and feels more eager. Owners wanting more output pair it with tuning, a larger turbo or exhaust work.

Why buy this rather than a used engine?

A used K20C arrives with an unknown history of boost, heat and oil changes. This unit starts with new Honda parts, deburred castings and moving parts matched far closer than the factory allows, all assembled with controlled clearances. For a car that will be tuned or tracked, that known base is the main reason to pay more.

Does it fit US FK8 cars?

Yes. The US Civic Type R sold from the 2017 to 2021 model years is the FK8 with the same K20C turbo engine and 6-speed manual that Spoon registers, and Go Tuning, the sole US distributor for Spoon, sells this engine for those cars. The JDM build dates do not change fitment.

What is the benefit of deburring the castings?

Production castings can carry tiny flashes of metal at their edges. Under heat and vibration those fragments can break away and circulate in the oil, and a sharp edge also concentrates stress. Spoon removes every burr from the block and head before assembly, which protects bearings and adds a margin for hard use.

Is the engine ready to run on delivery?

Spoon delivers an assembled engine built to its specification, but it does not publish a list of the ancillary parts fitted, such as intake, turbo or wiring. Ask BA to confirm what transfers from your current engine. A shop should prime the oil system before the first start.

Description

Spoon Sports Complete K20C Engine for FK8 Honda Civic Type R

The Spoon Sports Complete K20C Engine for FK8 Honda Civic Type R is the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine of the tenth-generation Type R, built from new Honda components by the Tokyo team behind Spoon’s FK8 parts. Spoon has run the FK8 in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, and its view is that a Honda engine only shows its true character when it is assembled to a finer standard than mass production allows. The piston, pin and rod sets in this K20C are weighed and matched within 0.02 g per cylinder against a total of roughly 1,100 g, a spread of 0.002 percent. Spoon puts the factory Type R tolerance at 0.2 percent. This is the engine for an FK8 that has used up its original on track or needs a fresh, known-good base for serious development.

Preparation and Assembly

Spoon removes burrs from every edge of the block and head, so no casting flash can break off inside the engine and no sharp edge becomes a stress riser. Clearances are then set in a cleanroom held at a steady temperature, because the steel sleeves, crankshaft and valves expand differently from the aluminium block, head and pistons around them.

Features

Built from new Honda components
Moving parts matched within 0.02 g per cylinder
Deburred block and cylinder head castings
Temperature-controlled cleanroom assembly
Built to order in Tokyo

About Spoon Sports

Spoon Sports was founded in 1988 in Suginami, Tokyo, by Tatsuru Ichishima, a former Honda race car tester and driver, with backing from Honda and Mugen. The company has raced Hondas from its first season, when Ichishima’s own Civic became the first Civic to enter the Japan Touring Car Championship, and its Type One workshop, opened in 2001, services and tunes the cars its parts are developed on. Spoon builds engine, drivetrain, exhaust, chassis and aero parts for Honda models and proves them on circuits and in endurance racing, including the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.

Additional Information

The Bulletproof Automotive website contains many thousands of products purchased in multiple different currencies. All of the prices are entered manually and accurately at the time of entry. Due to the consistently fluctuating international exchange rates, at times prices may not be able to be honored at their original intended rate. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, unfortunately our website is unable to compensate dynamically for what can at times be volatile changes in the cost of items due to currency values fluctuating, changes in prices from suppliers, changes in shipping and import duties, and other factors. Rest assured that any order you place on line will be at zero risk to you in this area. If in the event your order cannot be fulfilled at the original intended website price we will offer you a 100% refund, no questions asked. We will continue to do our best to maintain updated prices and we will always continue to offer our price match guarantees as well to ensure our prices are always the best for you. In short, prices may change without notice. It is always advised to give us a call prior to placing your order online to confirm availability and to confirm current pricing.

Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. Please review the full Terms & Conditions here.

BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
