The BRZ / GR86 HD Edition AT-M3 motorsport wing from ADRO exists because the ZD8 / ZN8 platform, tuned or not, starts running out of rear stability right about the time you’re using all of the front grip these cars are known for. In its HD Edition, this is the same AT-M3 mainplane and uprights built for the GR86 and BRZ, but it ships from day one with the high-downforce gurney flap and the larger, inward-angled HD endplates already fitted, instead of something bolted on later once the standard wing turns out to be enough for the street but not enough for a real lapping day. The gain is stated, not implied; roughly 192N (43.2lbs) of additional downforce for about 35N (7.9lbs) of drag at 180km/h (112mph), on top of what the standard AT-M3 already generates on this chassis, measured at a fixed wing angle. Every component, mainplane, gurney, and endplates, is autoclave-cured prepreg carbon fiber, the same process ADRO runs across its lineup, holding the resin-to-fiber ratio tight so the wing doesn’t flex its angle of attack away exactly when a wet layup part would. The gurney sits along the mainplane on 3M tape and picks up at each endplate; all mounting hardware ships with it. What the Gurney Flap Actually Does

A gurney flap is a small tab standing up at the trailing edge of the wing, and its effect on downforce is out of proportion to its size. Air stacks up against it and rolls off the back edge into a pair of trailing vortices that sit just behind the wing, working like an invisible extension of the wing’s shape. The wing ends up behaving as though its profile were more curved than it physically is, which is the entire mechanism behind the gain; a small piece of geometry changes what the airflow reads as the wing’s shape, and it does it efficiently. The HD endplates are solving a separate problem. Air at the tips of any wing tries to spill from the high-pressure side to the low-pressure side, and every bit that escapes is downforce that never gets used. The HD endplates are larger than the standard AT-M3 units and angle inward at the lower edge instead of sitting flat, sealing more of the wing’s span so that pressure difference stays where it’s doing work. They also pick up the outer ends of the gurney flap, so the mainplane, gurney, and endplates function as one assembly, and on the BRZ / GR86 HD Edition AT-M3 that assembly ships as a single fitted unit from the start.

Dialing In the Extra Downforce

How much of that gain you actually run is up to the driver.
