What problem does the Progressive Spring Set for FL5 solve?

Spoon tested a stock FL5 and found the body slow to start rolling on corner entry, which pushed the car off line, and a ride slightly too hard in town. The Progressive Spring Set for FL5 uses a soft initial rate and added rebound stroke to answer both.

How much lower and stiffer is it than stock?

Spoon lowers the car by about 20 mm and raises the rate by about 10 percent, to 5.5 kgf/mm front and 5.0 kgf/mm rear. The drop is modest enough for daily use, and the progressive winding keeps the first part of the stroke softer than the headline rates suggest.

Can I keep the factory adaptive dampers?

Yes. The springs replace only the factory coils, and Spoon developed them on the standard car with its own dampers in place. Damper modes continue to work as Honda intended, so the car keeps every drive mode setting it had before the change.

Will it work with the Spoon front stabilizer?

Yes. Spoon requires its adjustable stabilizer link only when the front sits more than 40 mm below stock or the bar runs in the stiffer inner holes. At the 20 mm drop of these springs, the front bar can be fitted in its outer 130 percent position with the factory links.

Is it comfortable enough for daily driving?

Yes, and comfort was a stated goal. Spoon lowered the load needed to start the spring moving, so small bumps are absorbed more gently than on the factory springs, while the rate climbs steadily as the car loads up through a fast bend or a long sweeper.

Description

Spoon Sports Progressive Spring Set for FL5 Honda Civic Type R

The Spoon Sports Progressive Spring Set for FL5 Honda Civic Type R began with Spoon driving a stock car on circuits, mountain roads and city streets to learn what Honda had built. Spoon found a very aggressive setup with high roll stiffness, which brought two problems: on track the body was slow to begin rolling on corner entry, pulling the car off the line the driver had chosen, and on the street the ride was a touch too hard. The springs are about 10 percent stiffer than stock, at 5.5 kgf/mm front and 5.0 kgf/mm rear, and lower the car by about 20 mm, with extra rebound stroke so the wheels follow dips and gaps more faithfully. It suits an FL5 owner who wants a lower car that is easier to place on corner entry and calmer around town; a car on adjustable coilovers is beyond what this set is for.

Design and Development

Comfort came from the way the spring is wound. Spoon added coils and lengthened the wire, lowering the load needed to start the spring moving, then used an unequal-pitch barrel shape to tune how quickly the rate builds. The result is a soft rate in the first part of the stroke for town driving and a firm rate deep in the travel at speed, a supple but tenacious feel.

Features

Unequal-pitch barrel shape tunes how the rate builds
More coils and longer wire lower the initial load to move the spring
About 10 percent stiffer than stock, at 5.5 and 5.0 kgf/mm
Added rebound stroke over dips and road gaps
About 20 mm lower for a lower center of gravity

Rest assured that any order you place on line will be at zero risk to you in this area. If in the event your order cannot be fulfilled at the original intended website price we will offer you a 100% refund, no questions asked. Shipping Policy

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance. Due to the wide number of variables between manufacturer and shipping schedules, delivery estimates are simply just that – estimates. We attempt to estimate conservatively and we usually deliver faster than our estimates suggest. It is not Bulletproof’s policy to guarantee delivery time of any special order item, this is impossible for us to do. By ordering you acknowledge that there is no required delivery ETA and an order may not be canceled or altered due to manufacturing or shipping delays, all ETA’s are provided as a best guess only. BP Pricing Difference

We do pricing a little differently on our JDM brands and we believe in making things simple and clear. No hidden fees or surcharges. Every price you see includes the shipping cost to our office in Los Angeles, California and all the associated taxes/duties/fees for bringing the products into the US. The only shipping you ever pay is from our facility in the US to your location. Be wary of resellers that don’t include the cost of international shipping in their pricing on JDM parts. While we believe we’ll always have the lowest all-in price on JDM products, we offer a price match guarantee for all authentic parts purchased from authorized dealers as well. For many international customers, it’s much more affordable to ship from the USA than from Japan directly, as the air freight and ocean freight costs are typically much less. However, for customers looking to ship directly from Japan outside of North America, or domestically in Japan, we can provide pricing specifically for that scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any pricing questions or concerns. Please email us at sales@bulletproofautomotive.com with any inquiries.
