Eventuri Gloss Carbon Intake System for ZN8 Toyota GR86

The GR86 Intake by Eventuri represents the culmination of extensive testing, involving over 125 dyno runs, to achieve an optimized design. Both stock and tuned vehicles were tested to evaluate the impact of a less restrictive intake. Given the sensitivity of the NA 2.4L Boxer engine to intake air temperatures, the initial priority was to ensure a fully sealed system. During dyno testing, a power dip around 6000rpm was observed on the stock ECU, persisting across all intake configurations, including those with removed restrictions. This dip, caused by strong engine resonance, momentarily drops power below the stock curve. The stock airbox, while mitigating this resonance, also restricts top-end power. Through iterative design testing, involving various intake lengths, duct openings, and the addition of baffles, Eventuri developed a version that minimizes this resonance dip while delivering a 14hp gain at the top end on the stock ECU. Further ECU tuning results in significant mid-range gains and the elimination of the power dip below the stock curve.

The Eventuri Difference

• The GR86 Eventuri system incorporates a patented carbon fiber housing that provides an aerodynamically efficient airflow path from the filter to the engine. Unlike traditional cone filters with heat shields, this design invokes the Venturi effect, maintaining laminar flow conditions and reducing drag on the engine. The intake system comprises several precisely engineered components, all fabricated to the highest standards. Eventuri uses 100% pre-preg carbon fiber, avoiding fiberglass, which allows for a smooth internal surface that facilitates smoother airflow.

Filter Housing Assembly

• The filter housing includes a bespoke generation 2 filter, an aluminum inlet cowl, and an integrated MAF section. The carbon pod shrouds the reverse-mounted filter and smoothly directs the airflow to the MAF section, which then connects to the rear inlet tube. This design contrasts with the OEM airbox, where airflow enters from the front, changes direction by 90 degrees through the panel filter, and again by 90 degrees to move through the MAF section. Eventuri’s system offers a more direct path, allowing airflow to enter the front of the filter housing and move into the MAF section without abrupt direction changes. This results in a smoother path from the filter to the turbo inlet tube, enabling the turbo to function with less drag. To ensure a reliable seal with the MAF sensor, a CNC machined mount is secured to the carbon housing.

Patented Technology

• The patented filter housing features a smooth reduction in cross-sectional area, tapering down to the tubing, which invokes the Venturi effect by accelerating the airflow while maintaining laminar conditions. This design functions similarly to a large velocity stack, offering a more efficient airflow path compared to regular intake systems. Eventuri’s bespoke filters further aid in creating an even velocity profile as the airflow exits the housings, as detailed on the Technology and Filters pages.

Carbon Duct

• The duct feeds the filter housing with ambient air from the front bumper / grill section. Through testing various iterations, Eventuri found that a dual intake, drawing cold air from both openings in the slam panel area, provided the least restrictive airflow. The front bumper area, saturated with cold air from Eventuri’s scoops and the OEM cavity design, feeds the duct, which features an expanding rubber seal to maintain a reliable connection with the filter housing while accommodating engine movement. This duct is mounted in three positions for a secure fit.

Front Scoops

• Finally, two front scoops, positioned behind the lower grill, direct ambient air upwards into the duct opening, helping to maintain low intake air temperatures (IATs) while the vehicle is in motion. Even for owners with aftermarket oil coolers who cannot use the scoops, IATs remain low due to the natural saturation of cold air behind the bumper.
