HKS intercoolers enhance both the efficiency and power of any turbocharged application by rapidly cooling the compressed intake air charge before it enters the engine. Utilizing a specialized tube and fin design, the intercooler acts as a large heat exchanger, dissipating the heat generated by compression without reducing boost pressure or response.

R-Type

• The R TYPE intercooler is designed for circuit use and is ideal for use with both stock replacement turbines and wastegate-type large turbines. It enhances turbine performance regardless of engine RPM, particularly during straight-line driving and acceleration after cornering. It is approximately 25% lighter than conventional products, based on in-house comparisons.

Cooling Efficiency Improvement = Torque Increase

• The cooling efficiency of an intercooler is influenced by factors such as the frontal surface area of the core, cooling fin design, and airflow through and over the core. HKS has increased the core size to improve airflow and introduced a new type of cooling fin for better heat dissipation. Core end tanks are designed to distribute compressed air evenly across the entire intercooler core. These enhancements maximize the reduction of intake air temperature, increasing air density and expanding the range of fueling and ignition settings, leading to greater power and torque.

Lower Pressure Loss = Better Response

• In addition to cooling efficiency, reducing pressure loss is crucial for optimal intercooler performance. Significant pressure drops can diminish throttle response and torque. However, minimizing pressure loss while enhancing cooling efficiency can be challenging, as these goals often conflict; reducing pressure loss typically worsens cooling efficiency. A major cause of pressure drop is the cross-sectional area of the tubes through which air flows, as well as the layout and shape of the inner fins. HKS has focused on improving cooling efficiency while achieving a low resistance design with thin fins. The tube design has been carefully considered to increase the cross-sectional area. With these measures, high cooling efficiency has been achieved without compromising pressure drop.
