The Audi R8 4.2L FSI is a remarkable supercar that combines a V8 engine, an aluminum monocoque spaceframe, and a captivating design that exudes both elegance and aggression. Given this dual-purpose nature, the exhaust system was meticulously crafted to meet specific criteria: to deliver a comfortable and refined sound while cruising, while also unleashing a raw and powerful character with an exhilarating note at high revs.

Cross Sections

• To achieve an optimal balance of torque and increased power, all cross sections in the exhaust system have been enlarged by approximately 10% compared to the stock configuration. This deliberate enhancement ensures improved performance while maintaining an optimal torque-to-power ratio.

The Sound

• Integrating the customary advancements offered by Kline, including an immaculate x-pipe geometry to achieve their renowned fiery roar, the exhaust system also features a valvetronic mechanism. This technology enables you to drive your R8 in serene silence during cruising moments, while unleashing a captivating, high-pitched, and aggressively resonant vocalization when the valves open. During valve closure, the exhaust gases are redirected through a series of chambers and acoustic segments, effectively eliminating any noise or resonance within the cabin. However, when the valves open, the exhaust system transitions into a completely unrestricted flow, optimizing both performance and sound. The gases solely pass through Kline’s signature x-pipe, skillfully enhancing the exhaust note with an elevated pitch.

Performance

• By eliminating restrictions in the silencer section and implementing a fully unrestricted flow system when the valves are open, the exhaust achieves peak efficiency. This modification not only maximizes the performance of the exhaust but also leads to moderate enhancements in both power and torque output. Enjoy a 16hp and 22nm power and torque gain.

Materials

• The Kline Innovation Audi R8 exhaust is offered in two material options. Firstly, there is the 304 Stainless Steel variant, weighing approximately 19.5 kilograms. Additionally, for those seeking an ultra-lightweight option, there is the F1 Grade Inconel 625 version, weighing just around 9.0 kilograms.
  • Stainless Steel:
    • Stainless steel of grade 304 has emerged as the prevailing industry standard for exhaust manufacturing. With its moderate strength, thermochemical stability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of production, 304 stainless steel allows for the construction of exhaust systems that are relatively affordable while maintaining a high level of functionality and durability. However, one notable drawback of stainless steel is its weight. While it shares a similar density to regular steel, it possesses reduced tensile strength. This limits the ability to build high-performance exhaust components using stainless steel. Additionally, in terms of sound characteristics, the thicker sidewalls required by stainless steel can result in a slightly lackluster and dull exhaust note compared to the aforementioned materials.
  • Inconel:
    • Inconel 625, renowned for its application in the aerospace industry where durability and heat resistance are paramount, is commonly used for manufacturing components such as exhaust turbine blades in high-performance jet engines. Formula One exhaust systems also employ Inconel, and it has been chosen by manufacturers involved in hypercar projects like the McLaren P1 and Aston Martin 177. These applications benefit from Inconel’s ability to withstand high temperatures exceeding 1000°C while prioritizing lightweight design.
    • Inconel exhibits exceptional properties, including extraordinarily high tensile strength and outstanding thermochemical stability. Due to its high tensile strength, which is comparable to that of titanium in terms of strength-to-weight ratio, Inconel allows for the use of thin sidewall materials while maintaining structural integrity. This results in the production of lightweight components that resist fatigue over time. However, there are certain challenges associated with Inconel, such as its difficult machinability and welding process, which require high skill and time-consuming techniques. Additionally, Inconel is an expensive raw material due to its unique properties and specialized manufacturing processes.
