CSF has launched a high-performance all-aluminum Front Mount Heat Exchanger upgrade for the A90/91 Toyota Supra (and select BMW G-Series models) to address the overheating issues of the BMW B58 engine’s charge air cooler system. After six months of development, this upgrade combats heat soak, which has plagued Supra track enthusiasts, often leading to high intake air temperatures, power cuts, and limp mode. With power mods pushing up to 800whp, this new solution ensures sustained performance by managing the excessive heat that limits the stock system’s efficiency.

After six months of development and testing with renowned Supra tuners worldwide, CSF is delighted to unveil its latest innovation: the high-performance all-aluminum charge cooler Front Mount Heat Exchanger upgrade for the A90/91 Toyota Supra (compatible with select BMW G-Series models). Since its release in 2019, enthusiasts have eagerly sought performance enhancements to unlock the full potential of the BMW-sourced B58 engine. As the vehicle gained popularity, certain weaknesses became widely discussed on various online platforms and race tracks. One prominent issue that quickly surfaced, particularly for those taking the car to track days, was the rapid heat soak of the liquid-cooled charge air cooler system. This resulted in soaring intake air temperatures (IATs), triggering power cuts by the ECU and eventually forcing the car into limp mode. CSF engineers witnessed this overheating problem firsthand during their attendance at the Global Time Attack Finals at Buttonwillow Raceway in November 2019. Numerous heavily modified Supra racecars struggled to complete even a couple of laps in moderate ambient conditions without entering limp mode. Drivers were compelled to take cooldown laps, and some even resorted to spraying their front mount heat exchangers with cold water in the pits. In response, aftermarket tuning companies have since developed bolt-on performance upgrades, software tunes, and upgraded hybrid-turbos. Several companies have pushed the engine’s limits with fully upgraded turbo kits, achieving horsepower outputs close to 800whp. However, the increased power also generates significant heat from the engine, placing additional strain on the already flawed charge-air cooling system. As power upgrades are implemented, the ECU may start retarding timing and reducing power output, even during spirited driving, not just on the track.
How it works
With CSF’s renowned expertise in high-performance BMW cooling systems, its engineers swiftly identified the key areas that required improvement to optimize and sustain consistent performance of the B58 engine. Drawing on their extensive knowledge, they recognized the similarities between the B58 and S55 engines found in the latest F8X M3/M4 models. Both engines utilize a liquid-to-air charge cooler positioned atop the engine, accompanied by a front mount heat exchanger (water radiator). The heat exchanger cools the fluid, which then circulates through the charge cooler, effectively dissipating heat from the charge air before it enters the engine. This understanding enabled CSF to address the specific cooling challenges associated with the B58 engine and develop effective solutions to enhance performance and maintain optimal operating conditions.
Unlike the stand-alone design found in the F8X S55 variant, the B58 engine’s liquid-to-air charge cooler is integrated directly into the intake manifold. This integration poses a significant challenge when it comes to replacing the charge cooler with a high-performance solution, as there is currently no aftermarket support available. Due to this limitation, the most effective solution for regulating intake air temperatures on a modified or track-ready Supra is to upgrade to the CSF Front Mount Heat Exchanger. This innovative heat exchanger provides the necessary performance enhancement and temperature control that is not attainable through other means in the current market.
Unlimited Performance, CSF’s Asian distributor and R&D partner, conducted a validation test of the CSF B58 High-Performance Heat Exchanger using their stage-2 track-spec G29 BMW Z4 fitted with a prototype unit. The test took place at Tianma Raceway in Shanghai, and the results were highly promising. According to the feedback from our development team, the intake air temperatures (IATs) consistently remained 10-15°F (5.5-8.3°C) lower compared to the stock heat exchanger. Moreover, the CSF Heat Exchanger showcased a remarkable maximum temperature delta of 40°F (22.2°C) reduction when compared to the OEM cooler. These findings are significant as they demonstrate the Heat Exchanger’s ability to effectively regulate temperatures, allowing the test Z4 to remain on the track for extended periods. Additionally, the CSF Heat Exchanger contributed to improved airflow throughout the entire cooling system, resulting in lower engine water and engine oil temperatures.

Items that are in stock in the US, either at Bulletproof’s warehouse or at a supplier’s warehouse, are generally delivered within 7-10 days. Special order items from overseas take considerably longer. As a courtesy Bulletproof offers delivery estimates to our customers which take into consideration manufacturer availability and shipping schedule. These estimates represent our best guess based on previous orders from the manufacturer and do not in any way imply a guaranteed delivery window. Many manufacturers work in a “just in time” inventory system and often take 2-20+ weeks to produce an item once an order is submitted. All deliverable items are then sent to our Japanese warehouse. Bulletproof ships a minimum of one full ocean freight container every month from Japan, oftentimes more than one a month. Ocean freight takes an average of 4 weeks. Typically it breaks down to one week in Japan for paperwork and customs, two weeks by boat and one week in US customs/clearance.
