Engineering

• The 981 intake closely resembles the 987.2 intake, though Porsche introduced a few enhancements with the 981 model—most notably, sourcing outside air from both the driver and passenger intakes, unlike the single intake on the driver’s side in the 986, 987, and 987.2 models. IPD developed a custom silicone hose specifically designed to fit the larger 82mm throttle body, providing a significant boost in airflow. The 981 Plenum also features an internal dimpling effect that optimizes the boundary layer to maximize airflow. Like a dimpled golf ball that travels farther than a smooth one, controlled turbulent air in the dimpled surface reduces friction, enabling it to “tumble” more efficiently across the surface.

Power

• The initial independent dyno test of the 981 Competition Plenum showed gains of 13 horsepower and 12 foot-pounds of torque at the wheels. The majority of these power gains begin around 3700rpm, continue through to redline, and are fully realized around 6500rpm. IPD’s performance improvements remain above factory power curves across the entire rev range. Noticeable power gains were also felt in the initial throttle response of the customer test vehicle, a sensation that was confirmed during dyno testing.
